Not having done anything with subtitles before (not much call for subtitles when you're only watching flicks where they are blowing sh*t up for two hours :D ) I happily forgot all about them when doing Lucas' latest.
Now I have a nice, fat, m2v file and an ac3 ready to mux back together in Maestro, but I forgot about the required subtitles in SWEP2-AOTC, such as when Annakin returns to visit Watto (?) on Tatooine, or when Dooku is consulting with his allies.
I don't want to have to re-encode the video again, so can anyone tell me how to extract the (english) subtitle track I need to complete this project. I have got past the multiple angle situation on the opening chapter that has dogged a few people, so all I need is to re-incorporate the correct subtitle track and author it.

Decrypter > dvd2avi > TMPG Plus > Maestro is the path I follow.

HELP!!

Yeah, that one took me a while.

Here's what I ended up doing:

Used IFOedit to rip out an "angle-free" set of VOBS. Then, using SubRip, ripped out the subs from the new VOBS (English 2, I believe) in Maestro format.

Then, when re-authoring, imported the subtitles, making each subtitle (there were less than 30, if memory serves) "forced" so it always displays, even with subs off.

Thanks for responding. I've just d/l SubRip and am somewhat confused by the dialog boxes. Could you detail what your choices were when it asks about colors etc? Whichever I choose it comes up with a dialog that says it cannot process this subtitle index - huh???

LOST might sum up my position right now. Can u help? Are there guides for this app?

Cheers m8

yes, I believe Trighlight's guide tells you what to do

Errrr... OK, I have found a guide to SubRip here http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/dvdr-guides.htm.
Have followed it through and ended up with 1,324 subtitle bmps.
Obviously this is the entire subtitle track for the whole movie. What I want is only the subtitles for the conversations that require them, so how do I locate them?
I can see when you add them into Maestro, but how do I locate the correct ones from 1,324 of them (and position them on the timeline correctly)?

I'm brainlocked here - can you help?

Yes, you ripped English track 1. You don't want that one. You need to rip the other English track (I believe 2). You will know you have the right one because it is only a few bitmaps.

You can select alternate subtitle tracks if you open the IFO (not the VOBS).

This is driving me nuts...
I decided to start afresh with a clean rip. I loaded Decrypter, selected main movie files and extracted. Then loading the vobs into SubRip, it lists 4 English streams. English - 1 is the full english subtitle set (that's what I did last night).
BUT if I select English -2 I get exactly the same 1324 bmp files - it's another full english subtitle set!
English - 3 and - 4 are identical too - they are Diector's commentaries.
Reading up on the guides I tried doing a stream processing rip from Decrypter. This identified a Forced Subtitle English stream. I was able to extract that to a .SUB file, but Maestro won't import it so I don't know how to incorporate it.
I am going to try doing a full File mode rip now to see if I can locate the correct stream - maybe it's not in the main movie files if you leave Decrypter in that mode.
Can you shed any light?
Sorry to rag on at you but you're the only one who's responded.

The director's commentaries are subtitled? I don't remember that.

I do remember it took me a while to find the right ones. Perhaps they weren't marked English or something. Just rip them all into separate dirs and look for the one with very few (under 30).

One other thing that is very important: If you rip the subs from the original VOBS they will not work right. You need to use IFOEdit (VOB Extras) to extract Angle 1 to a new set of VOBS. Then do your ripping from there.

when i did attack of the clowns i just saw that both english sub streams have close captions so decided to skip them alltogether.

the difference between english 1 and 2 is that the second stream has a smaller font, otherwise they're identical.

I am trying to do this as well on the Traffic DVD. I imported the correct sub file to Maestro but in the preview and in a finished DVD the subtitles do not show up.

OK found out how to force the subtitles in Maestro, but do you have to do each one individually?? I know there is a master pallete for the colours, but is there one where you can force all the subtitles at the same time??

Thanks for replying.
I have loaded the main movie .ifo into IfoEdit (i have v091). Looking at the multiangle guide that's on doom9, it says to check Remove Angles and then select the one you want to keep. Well these 2 options are greyed out!!
Is this something to do with the checkbox in Decrypter that says "Multi Angle Processing" is unchecked? In the guide it says that this should be unchecked, so that's how I left it. It does, if you enable it, allow you to select angles to keep - do you think this is relevant?
Your help is appreciated bud.

i just selected multiangle processing in DVD-Decrypter 3.0.14.0 and selected angle1 to be retained. Ripped the main movie files in file mode (the log window should say that additional angle sectors are being skipped). served with dvd2avi in force film mode and made a simple .avs to wrap it into cce 2.5. then just ran the resulting .mpv thru pulldown -prog_frames p and authored as a single pgc title in scenarist. I think the avg bitrate turned out to be ~3800kbps

in DVD decrypter using IFO mode, just check the angle that corresponds to the main movie (usually angle one) and dont chech the other boxes next to the other angles.

Then it will strip out that angle and create new VOB files that you can work with. i did the same thing that wfn1 did and it turned out great.

Hmm. This more closely resembles how I have previously done all my DVD-9 > DVD-5 projects: I usually rip main movie files from Decrypter, then load vobs into dvd2avi to make .d2v project file, then load demuxed .d2v into TMPG Plus to transcode, then load .m2v, ac3 into Maestro to reauthor new VIDEO_TS folder, and burn.

Are you saying that by ripping with angle 1 only I will preserve the narrative subtitles (which is the only thing screwed up on previous go following above)?

I'm feeling almost encouraged here m8, don't tell me no, pleeez!

i'm not 100% on this but i though the extra angles in aotc are credits in different languages... i don't think they have anything to do with subs. unfortunately i no longer have the original to verify this.

Update
I have just ripped the vobs again from source with Decrypter set to preserve angle 1 only.
Loaded the vobs into SubRip 1.11, it lists 4 English streams. Have set SubRip to extract all 4 streams into separate destination folders, and hey presto - no subtitles detected on any of em. D'oh!

wfn1 / jrg
Does your rip play correctly with the subtitles showing during the "alien" conversation sequences?

What do I try now guys?

JF

i did not preserve the subs after i saw that both english streams has close captions in them but subrip 1.11 had no problem finding them.

do you have aotc region 1 ntsc? if so it's highly irregular.

No I have the PAL R2 version. Could you verify that you do indeed see the narrative subtitles?

Things I have thought of: Is it possible that PowerDVD (which I am testing the vobs with) isn't showing the subtitles?

Also: just loaded the .ifo into ifoedit v.095 and can see 4 SubPicture English streams listed under the Title Set (Movie). If I double click on the first it says Closed Caption Normal Size, the second and third both say Director Comments Normal Size, and the last says Forced Caption English.

Do you think the Forced Caption is the one I need? If so how do I get at it?

JF:

I think the angle thing stopped working in IFOEdit lately. You need version .932, but it looks like you took care of the angle problem with DVDDecrypter anyway.

I'd try Subrip separately on each stream. Also, make sure you copied the sub streams with DVDDecrypter in the first place...

I set Decrypter to FILE mode, checked the box for Select Main Movie Files, left Merge VOB Files unchecked, and checked Multi Angle Processing, which enabled me to select 1 in Retain Angle in VOB dialog.

Should I try different settings, FP?

JF

PS Just played a sequence from my source disc in PowerDVD and that does display the subtitles when Annakin meets Watto etc.

All I can tell you is how I did it:

-Ripped entire DVD in file mode
-used "VOB extras" in IFOEdit .932 to create a new set of VOBS with angle one
-used Subrip on that new set, ripping each track until I found the special alien language only track
-ripped out the m2v with something - can't remember
-reauthored with Maestro, setting those 30 or so subtitles as forced (yes, one at a time)

JF Sebastian

OK FP and thanks. I will stop badgering you over this! :o

quote:
"-used "VOB extras" in IFOEdit .932 to create a new set of VOBS with angle one"

I haven't done much with IfoEdit, so please point me to your method for producing this new set of VOB's in the guides and I'll try to follow it, or better still briefly run it down here if you can :D

After this I think I'll admit that the evil Lucas Empire has defeated me. All for 30 or so subtitles - what an almighty pain in the ***!

Thanks for your help so far.

 sod it. I'm sick of this!

Followed the guide here:
http://www.doom9.org/mpg/ifoedit-menustripping.htm and ended up with a fresh set of vobs, which contain 1 subpicture. Loaded into SubRip and 1 subtitle stream is available - sure as sh*t it's the full subtitle track again!!

I give up. If somebody ever figures out how to get the alien subtitles from AOTC R2 please post it.

First off let me say that subtitles are strange. Everyone has a different opinion of how they are placed in the movie and honestly I think that is because each movie may be different.
My experience - 90% of the movies I do, I do not rip the subtitles, and the forced subtitles are still there....that is right!!! still there...try Sumofallfears or Xfiles seasons...Don't ask me how...maybe they are in the movie stream? don't know...all I can tell you is that using IFOEdit I strip all but the movie and ac3...no subtitles, and they are still there....BUT...not in AOTC...so...
I am using an R1 disc

-Rip the DVD using Decrypter with Angle 1 only...that fixes the stupid 3 angle intro/language change crap
-Load into DVD2avi...do your thing to get m2v and ac3 of your choice (encode)...that is standard
-now open subrip and load the ifo for the movie mine had 4 streams...english, french, english, english 1,2,3,4 respectively.
-now two things...1. before you start you can go to the global options on subrip and tell it to do "Forced subtitles only", that way it will only rip subs that are forced so if you go thru an entire vob set without hitting a subtitle...there are none forced in that stream...move on to the next stream (for me it was stream 4)
2. if you don't tell it to do forced only and it starts steaming thru a sh*t load of titles you are in the wrong stream...I had only 28 subtitle bitmaps when done.
-now as far as i know subrip does not "save" the forced flag on the subtitle so you have to "tell" maestro to force the title (there is a way to edit the .son file and make all subs forced as well as a way to tell maestro to load the subtitle stream by default at dvd start which would save you from having to force each one) i recommend telling maestro to force each one individually.
-import you m2v, ac3, and chapters, delete the m2v and place the m2vdrop file (if you don't know what i mean read the dvd 9 to 5 guide or you subs won't sync) import your subs, encode, burn, enjoy.

I did this whole thing and realized i was doing PhantomMenace...
So I just did AOTC steams 1english 2english 3spanish 4french 5english...forced subs where in several streams 3 and 4 for sure (yes in english under the french and spanish stream???) different font tho:confused:
