View Full Version : Subs out of sync after video freeze

Hi,everyone.

I have made around 40 SVCD's with DVD2SVCD, and without exeption they ALL have the same problem when played on my Philips DVD 723 stand-alone player. When starting playing, all is fine until the first video freeze (lasts about 1 second), after which the subs are completely out of sync. It starts repeating subs from previous sequences, and it doesn't get back into sync.
I have seen a lot of mail on this subject, but I didn't find anything that solved my problem (possibly my ability to search...).
I have tried many things, and no change whatsoever:
- CBR at bitrates between 1200 and 2200 KBPS.
- With/without chapters
- Internal routines and Vstrip
- MPEGAV i.s.o MPEG2
I am running out of ideas and start to suspect my player to be the cause.
So my questions:
1) Is there someone with the same problem who has managed to solve this?
2) The Philips SVCD spec. may help. Can someone help me to get this spec?

Puppy.

Search on Philips and see the many problems with this brand of DVD player, especially when it comes to subs. Even though it states many places it can do them, it seems there are many issues.
I don't own one or do subs myself. I just have read many, many reports of issues.

Have you looked to see if there is a new firmware for your player?

Thanks Mark for your quick reply.
I did get the latest firmware and didn't help. I know that Philips players have problems (which is strange as Philips actually owns the SVCD specs, but the products don't seem to act accordingly). My guess is that it's not the subs themselves, but the freezes that causes the subs to unsync.
If someone could help me with getting the Philips SVCD spec. or give me a hint of where exactly things go wrong (I suspect that certain MPEG2 sequences upset the player, make it freeze and cause the sync problem). Any hint, detail or remark is welcome...

There is some rather superficial technical information on the SVCD in the pdf referenced on this page: http://www.licensing.philips.com/information/cd/video/documents575.html .
The actual standard is not owned by Philips (anymore?), it is an IEC-standard (which has to be bought from the IEC, I do not know any other sources): http://www.iec.ch/webstore/frames/webstore_search.htm
The Philips SVCD toolkit apparently contains a "SVCD verifier" which might help you in debugging your disc, but I have not seen these tools myself.

Thanks, Smiller.

The pdf gave me some leads however. In the meantime I had some feed-back of other Philips users, but still not enough to pinpoint the problem. I guess that spec's can be interpreted in many ways. I will try the SVCD verifier. If I ever get my hand on the Philips' specs. I will be back...
It's a shame because the quality of their products is good.
I will let you know.

Take care.
