Sould I use "Packed Bitstream" with 8 b-frames?

if you read the tool tip is says that allows decoding without a delay, so i would say yes.

I'm encoding right now "Army of Darkness", 2 audio track with:

QPEL
8 b-frames @ 150
DIVX Comp.
Packeted Bitstream
MAX P: 300
MIN P: 1

I would say no.

I've done many tests, using short parts of movies (Ghost Dog, Mulholland drive, about 3000-3500frames), to see the effect of "packed bitstream" and "div5 compatibility", because I had some jerky videos.

Here are the settings:
20-11-2002 (Koepi) or 20-11-2002 (Umaniac)
522kBs, MSP6, MPEG
Here are the results (quite the same for both builds):
BF-1-150/100: good quality (for the considerated bitrate), no dec problem
BF-1-150/100-DX5: same as above
BF-1-150/100-PB: quality little better, apparently no dec pb
BF-1-150/100-PB-DX5: same as above
Then:
BF-2-150/100: little improvements, no dec pb
BF-2-150/100-DX5: same as above
BF-2-150/100-PB: quality little better, jerky dec
BF-2-150/100-PB-DX5: same as above
Finally only tested w/ or w/o DX5 checked:
BF-3-150/100: better quality
BF-3-150/100-DX5: same as above
BF-3-200/150: improvements (higher average quant)
BF-3-200/150-DX5: same as above
I decoded my vids using either XviD.ax or FFDShow, w/o any PP: same results.

My conclusions:
DX5 cmpatibility: no quality or reading improvements.
Packed bitstream: the quality is better, but the movie is jerky, there must be a problem with it, at least on my computer.
Better setting for BF: 200/150-PB unchecked-DX5 unchecked.

FOr the developpers.
I did many other tests, and one was particularly surprising:
using Hinted ME made my video look terrible, I mean the quality was really awful, whereas without it, it's pretty correct.
I did nothing wrong, i used it without any recent improvements (BF, CM, GMC, QPEL), only HME.
Maybe ther's something wrong in the new builds, but I don't remember it was so nasty before (april or may builds looked much better with HME).
Other hand: QPel gives me some colorful artifacts, for example: color blue from a skirt that appears on a light pink skin (sometimes green, actually).

Anyway, XviD with BF really rocks, keep that way guys :)

Packet Bitstream can't be played on ffdshow. Only XviD decode it correctly. My test with Army of darkness will be completed tomorow (1 or 2 "r"?).

I'll now (I mean we) if it's ok with audio delay or not.

Yep, I have posted in the "XviD-14112002-1" thread, and nobody seemed to have that problem, therefore I thought it came from my computer.
But have a look there (Koepi's speaking):

It's a little shame, because PB makes the average quant higher, but I prefer to have 25fps, and the quality is still pretty good. But maybe Muholland drive is a very compressible movie (actually, I bet it is :))

Did you try decoding "packed bitstream" encodes with ffdshow only, or with xvid.ax as well? (For me, the result is the same, but my system already doesn't like xvid.ax much! ;))

Btw, have you found a solution for Ghost Dog (640*352) to put it on 1CD? ;)

Yes, I've tried both (no particular problem with xvid.ax on my system), but they give me jerky reading. My solutio is to give up PB for the moment.
About Ghost Dog, I had planned to do a 2Languages(French/English)-1CD Rip, that is to say:
french.ogg = 70MB
english.ogg = 73MB
video.avi = 556MB (Bitrate: 650kB/s)
french.srt = a few kB
When i see what I can get with BF-3-200/150 (with my test on Mulholland Drive at 520kB/s), I think I'll get it with Ghost Dog, even if it's sharper. And the resolution is 720x384 :D.
Actually, I already got it (nice quality with BF-2-150/0), but I kept PB checked... this means I lost 40 hours of work :(

It's done. I asked a 630000 kb movie but I recieved a 615234 kb. The quality is quite nice. Packeted Bitstream doesn't work now.
