hitting the right file size

im encoding some eps with the latest build of xvid, and have found them undersizing by 5 meg on a 210 meg target filesize.

im used to encoding with nandub and it always hits the filesize perfectly. (ive waited for xvid to get b-frame support before i made the change)

But im not sure what to tweek in xvid just yet, ive used the settings in the doom9 guide. Just wondering if anyone had any tips on what to change before i try some trial and error encodes.

Im thinking maybe because b-frames have bugs still its the reason for the undersizing.

I had qpel on and b-frames at their default settings.

I get undersize too with 2h16 movie. I'm using GMC + QPEL + 4 BFRAMES. Increase the desired filesize and you will be ok. I think the b-frames are in cause.

I don't think BF may be in cause: I made many tests, using 1,2 and 3 Bf only, and I always hit the desired size (about 11200ko for 11275 desired), exept usin packed bitstream (about 15000ko), or GMC+QPEL+PB (25000ko).
I'd say these options are guilty.

Packed bitstream has no 2pass support yet - and is a real curve treatment killer. There are some issues with bframes left (the 2nd pass "controlled mode" still deosn't work 100% correctly), but filesizes off by that much must be caused by packed bitstream.

Just use divx5-bframe compatibility and everything's fine.

If I made the first pass with PB, can I "not use" it on the second pass?

The stats will change so you have to redo the first pass as well :-/

Thx. You're right. Instead of ~1000 kbps, it encoded at 50 lol. :)
