Hi and welcome to the forums.

Is it possible to incorporate 5.1 surround sound into divx files?

Yes it is. Many people around here do it. Just use Nandub, and mux the standard way after selecting the video and AC3 track. You might have to set a delay in Audio-Interleaving. And you'll have to set Preload and Interleave values, also in Audio-Interleaving. I use 96ms for both, but for other possible values, and other good general information on the subject, please read the AC3 Q&A (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18318) in the Audio Forum.

Is it possible to play these divx files with surround on a Divx compatible DVD player? It should be possible on most standalones that support DivX. However to be sure you'll have to consult the particular player that you want to play it with.

is it possible to have 5.1 with mp3 audio?, or does it have to be ac3...I believe technically MP3 does suppport 5.1 audio streams, but unfortunately no application supports playing those. So for 5.1 audio you're stuck with either AAC, Vorbis, or AC3.

also RealAudio supports surround, which could be used with an avi through smil.
extra work, but it is an option
