A couple of questions I can't find answers to

First off just want to thanks the maker of Dvd2Svcd, what an awesome program! Ok now on to my questions..

1. When you select the ripping options, do you go with the internal routines or vstrip? I usually go with internal routines, not sure of the differences between the two?

2. Occasionally throughout my encodes, mostly from avi2svcd, using CCE 2.5, I get checksum errors, saying something didnt match like the last pass or something along those lines..whats the problem?

3. How do you choose the aspect ratio? it always defaults to 4:3, if I know the movie is in 16:9 do I switch to that even though it states (encoded as 4:3)

4. The guide says that you can use bitrateviewer to look at the properties and I do that, and it will say Field or Frame, but also say Zigzag and Progressive, the guide says uncheck if it says field, but when it does say field, zig zag and progressive are also on the properties of bitrate, how do I go about properly selecting these options?

5. Last but not least, every movie I make with Dvd2svcd either dvd, or avi, refuses to work on the computer, I have used Power dvd XP, Zoom player, Windows media player, every codec, just wont play, but play fine on all my stand alones, and my dvd player in my car...whats the deal?

Only some answers:

1: I personally use smartripper to have better control on angles etc. ;)
2: You have a hardware-problem. Overclocked or weak cpu/ram maybe.
3: I don´t care, what D2S assumes. I always select to edit the avisynth-file by hand.
4: ???
5: Your get errors or no picture or bad picture or or or or??? ;)

whenever I try to open it on two different computers, it goes to switch to the correct resolution, then says invalid file format...but they play fine on stand alones, and in my car dvd player..not sure what the problem is..

As far as a hardware problem, I'm running an Athlon Classic 1mb 700mhz cpu, with 384 megs of ram, and haven't had any problems encoding movies but a few of them just seem to die on me..albeit a faster machine would improve time, but this setup has proven itself rock solid in every other way, so I'm not sure..Josh

about question #4, basically im wondering how you go about choosing wether or not to use zig zag, progressive frames, and so forth..

On my computer, windvd always opens the video in a window :confused:
I think you have a problem with directx, graphics card or graphics card-driver.

4: I always use the presets. Click on the triangle beside "Advanced Settings"
in the encoder-tab. I think, thats what you searched :)

On your cce-crashes. It has proved (for me and many others) that cce-crashes
with the checksum-error-message happe because of weak/overclocked harware.
Just give it a try and first clock down your ram.

none of my hardware is overclocked..im running pc 133 Sdram dimms, to my knowledge not overclocked..what might I try to correct these errors?

JoshW, internal routines is what you choose to start with. If you have problems with that, you then choose vstrip. If from there, you have problems, you use a non built in ripper. The only one that usually is recommended when this happens, is smartripper. The reason why smartripper isn't included in dvd2svcd, is because it has habits of causing audio sync issues. It is not recommended to use it to start with. If you absolutly have to use smartripper, get 2.40 or lower, because 2.41+ is about the time when it really was giving async problems.

As for your playback issue. Do you try to open the cue/bin file directly in powerdvd? If so, that's your problem. You need to mount the cue/bin in daemon tools and play through that or burn the cue/bin to disc and try playing from your disc drive. If you are trying to watch the mpg files, powerdvd should play it by dragging and dropping the mpg into it. Otherwise, all the other media players that you mentioned need a MPEG2 codec or direct show filters to play it.

You might use smartripper all the time but your just looking for problems when using dvd2svcd, if you do tell someone that your using smartripper note to them that its been known to cause sync problems.


@joshw there is a crc patch for cce that you should download, search doom9 you'll find it that should fix the problem if not let us know.

How do you choose the aspect ratio?
You have to set the DVD2SVCD level in Misc tab to Advanced.

But be careful. Some say, selecting Anamorphic(no borders...16:9) may cause jerky playback on some standalones.

I am suspecting that he is simply lacking the mp2 video codec. The symptoms sound like it. Depending on his install, the media player will simply ask uncle bill for a propper codec, but won't get it. So I suspect that the codec is missing.

OK, so how does he get the codec?
How does he check whether or not he has it?
I'd answer but I don't know!
I've noticed that it's difficult to check this because:
- You go Settings: Multimedia: Video Codecs and it gives you names, but that's all. You don't get to see what the file extension should be, and you can't then search for that files extension. (There's something wrong amongst that description, but I KNOW that I've suffered from something along those lines when trying to check what codecs I've got onboard/installed.

Thanks for all of your replies...actually I did burn the bin/cues of course so they would play in my stand alones, and they work perfect, video comes out awesome everytime, but if I try to put it in my disk drive in the computer and open up Power DVD XP (4.0) it goes to switch the screen size to the right resolution of the movie then reports its an invalid file format code : blaha blah...however, if I have an avi file, that I encode as a svcd purely through tmpg I have no problems opening them once I have burned them onto cd's...so I'm not sure. I'm also going to search for that crc upgrade, I know that about 1 in every 5 movies I try to do, half way or so through the encode I get an error saying like the last pass didnt match this pass checksum error blah..so hopefully that works....do you most of you all just run the default settings? I think im going to stick with them until I get more familiar with what each setting does. Again thanks to everyone that replied. Josh
