advantage of minidvd?

can anybody tell me the advantage of minidvd over svcd?

is it just menus & sound?

You can have menus with a mpa track and still conform to SVCD compliancy. So the benefit? Well, basically if you get a DVD-R down the road, there is no *hack/patch* you have to apply to your mDVD to convert the stream to a DVD compliant stream since it already is. When you apply the *hack/patch* it many not work in all DVD drives since it's not at the correct DVD resolution. Ok, so mDVD sounds great then. Any drawbacks? Yea, not all SVCD players can play them.

But, in all honesty, I think thats BS. ;p Most people have apex drives and all apex drives can play them. I bet only 5% of the SVCD drives out there have a difficulty playing them. So, if your drive can, I would suggest creating them over standard SVCDs. Just make sure your GOP and other crud in CCE is set to DVD specs or else it will not be dvd compliant, even though it is SVCD/mDVD.

I disagree with that, pioneers don't play them for example. And pioneers are popular.

AFAIK you can use a higher bitrate. Even with a low average bitrate that's handy because the peaks can be higher (less chance of blockiness in action scenes, say).

Of course as minidvd is burned in mode1, less fits on a cd.

When discussing pioneers, and strictly speaking of the 50% of pioneers that can handle svcds, we are just talking about miniDVD's that conform the the SVCD bitrate standard of a MAX at 2500. That's what I was at least. I would still be interested in learning how many SVCD players can handle miniDVDs which conform to SVCD specs minus the resolution. I believe result may be quite high.

Anyway, we won't probably ever know. DVD-r is where it's at!
