VcdEasy always uses 8x regardless of choice

Burning SVCD with version 1.1.2
In the CDRDAO settings I choose 1x.
The log file is always reporting 8x and the
resultant total time taken is in line with 8x speed
Same result is I choose 2x speed.
How do I get the speed I choose?
I have a bunch of CD-R (non high speed) left
before the obvious option of buying high speed disks.

Also, I have the latest Nero and their options don't even
allow under 8x - at least that I could find. Am I
missing something?

EDIT: I have a Cendyne CDRW - The manual says it
can do 1x 2x up to 12x for CD-R. VcdEasy identifies
the drive as a Verbatim 321240AL, X8S2
