View Full Version : DivX5 question. Re: Playback

Something's troubling me.

Since I've made the switch to DivX 5, I've noticed something weird.

On one machine, I've got Dual Celron 500 CPU's, (the machine I use to do my encoding), and the final product plays flawlessly.

On the other machine, I have a 1.4ghz Athlon, 512meg memory, and I get all sorts of nasty blobuous artifacts.

Also, when I try to maxamize the video or play it full screen, there are a lot of droped frames and the video's really choppy.

Video cards are identical GeForce2 400MX's on both machines, using the same drivers, both machines have the same GordianKnot install, and both machines have DivX 5.02 pro installed.

I'm not exactly sure what would be causing such a problem, was wondering if maybe someone could shed some light into it, and perhaps give me a lil' more insight, because I've tried everything and I'm coming up blank.

Make sure that your color depth is set to 24 or 32 and Make sure that the graphics hardware acceleration is set to maximum. And try reinstalling DirectX8.

Color depth on the desktop? or some magical function in GK?

Hi-

The desktop. If it's 16 or 24 bit, try 32 bit, and if it's 32 bit, try 24 bit.

That's what it was...

I usually run @16bit, just because I'm from the old-school of thought where less is more, and over-kill is for whimps...and 32it color seems like overkill to me. Odd that the CPU would actually have to do that much more work to take the color to 16bit from 32..(I guess I didn't realize that the machine I encoded on was set at 32bit color..lol)...I guess we learn something new every day.

Hi-
It's due to the fact that when you try to display something based in a 32bit colour palette on a 16bit colour palette, windows trys to resample it from 32bit to 16bit.
My Theory:
Doing this on the fly as with a DivX is processor intensive and the result is dropped frames and colourized averaging which is when windows colour converter decides that this colour is "close enough", which gives the bolbous artifacts. Downsampling is much more intensive than upsampling(is that a word?).

you wouldnt see a difference in quality and performance in 8/16/32bit if your video overlay were working. you should check your drivers and settings, there must be something wrong.
the 32bit setting is not a perfect fix, it still uses unnecessary cpu power if the overlay is not working.

LMFAO, thanks for pointing that out. Your correct and now I feel like an idiot.
