XVID as Mpeg1 encoder: is it possible?

I ask it because some developers told me that Mpeg1 and Mpeg4 aren't very different, except for how they store textures.

If it could encode mpeg1 it would be a wonderful means to make VCD.

Actually TMPG seems to be the best mpeg1 around (any other product worth considering?) but it's so sloooow :(

Another free open-source video "codec" is ffmpeg - it is faster than XviD, with slightly lower quality, and can encode and decode MPEG-1, MPEG-4, Huffyuv, MJPEG and many other codecs. I posted a windows version here (www.geocities.com/hstink), though it's an older compile.

It wouldn't be too much work to fork XviD into an MPEG-1 video compressor, but I don't know anyone who both has the time and is able to.

I've never seen this answered anywhere else before. To answer it by searching the forum might take at least an hour or two of his time, thus posting was far more efficient. It took maybe . . .30 seconds of our time, and saved him much agony.

I don't think its been posted before.. but...well you know how they say there are no stupid questions: Well that one is pretty obvious. mpeg-4 is mpeg-4 wether its DivX3, DivX4, DivX5, XVid, whatever

I know very well that XVID in its current form can't generate Mpeg1 (I didn't ask if it's possible 'TODAY') ,
and before posting my question I searched the forum to verify that what I meant wasn't already answered.

Maybe I asked the wrong question (my fault) but there was someone as perspicient as -h (thanks) to understand that I was asking if it's
feasible, without producing a totally different project, to extend XVID (to use better MPEG1).

Is it more time and bandwidth consuming (and less educative) posting a question that is less stupid than it seems or zillions of flames and 'me too' messages?

Well, if one would want to make a VCD or SVCD movie from a XViD movie (with or without AC3 sound) - what would one need then?
