That is a bad DVD (scratched or otherwise unreadable)

Sounds like a scratch to me too, however I rented the DVD animal factory the other day and there was no way with no program I could rip this DVD, all programs available I tried and none were able to rip it. However it played fine on my DVD player. Ofcourse I checked the DVD for scratches and there were none. I even went back to the store and changed the DVD for another one, same problem! Somehow I think this was a protection thing but I would have no idea what it could be, never had this before and never since...

There have been a very few DVD's that don't work with either Vstrip or the Internal rountines. In these cases try SmartRipper if you haven't already, but use this sparingly to avoid potential problems.

It could also be a rare issue with your DVD Drive. I know that some computer DVD ROM drives can't play LOTR extended edition DVD's.

Also if your dvd player allows it you should upgrade firmware. Some people have even noticed improvements in speed after such upgrades. I did notice a slight increase with my dvd flash ugprades, but also i was reading in the text file that comes with it that it also supports more media with the upgrades so that could only be a good thing:)
