View Full Version : Easiest DVD-9 way to DVD-5 (DVD-R)?

There are so many programs and options. What is the easiest way to move some of my movies to a DVD-R 5? The guides here are very daunting. I tried a one with TMPGEnc and went all the way through. 9 hours later after a re-encode, it didn't work properly when muxing the MPEG back into the VOB.
Is CCE or TMPGEnc easier or less problematic? How about Rempeg? Any tried and true way to shrink the bitrate to fit on a DVD-R?
I guess I'm just surprised how many posts there are when the guides are *very* detailed. Do they not work?
Sorry for newbie questions. I've done VCD's and SVCD's based on the VCDHelp (http://www.vcdhelp.com) guides and these are much harder!
Thanks.

valnar,
It's only hard when you don't know how.
I think where a lot of people go wrong is with their basic PC setup.
Either it's just not powerful enough, or they have the wrong operating system.
Having said that, it took me a couple of weeks of solid reading / researching to get to my first backup. It was SHREK, and only after did I find out that it's not the best of movies to start with.
You ask the following :-

I've used Rempeg quite a lot, and currently use CCE. This is what I think.
Rempeg is free and very easy to use. The downside being it can take a LONG time to re encode. I used to have a P3 600, that took upto 30hrs to re encode. Upgraded to a P4 2Ghz, this takes less than 10hrs. Encode quality is very good, but problems are often encountered with Warner Brother movies. These can be overcome, but a bit more work is needed.
Software used :-
Smartripper
Ifoedit
Rempeg
Nero
CCE. A VERY costly application, but can be found VERY cheap if you look around. (say no more). Speedy is not the word, I can re encode a 2hr movie in about 1hr 45mins. Quality is very good, and I have not had a single problem with jerky pictures etc. However, the process is slighty more complex, as it involves more applications, you have to split the video / audio, then rejoin them, then re author. It sound complicated, but fairly quick. I can do a complete movie from ripping to burning in an evening.
Software used :-
Smartripper
DVD2AVI
CCE
Spruce Up
Nero
Your'e right about the complexity, but that's the nature of DVDs, theye are often a complicated set of videos. I just stick to "movie only" unlesss it's a DVD-5 type, then a staright rip is fine.
Hope that helps

Thanks Homer. I think I will try the rempeg approach next time. My PC is a P4 2.26Ghz ever so slightly overclocked to 2.4Ghz. Intel chipset all the way. Very compatible setup with Win2K Pro. (I need it that way for all my other VCD and video programs anyway).
Do the guides for DVD-9 --> DVD-5 work correctly without tweaking? Any other hints before I try again with a DVD?
Thanks!

hi mate , I have used Rempeg with No real problems to date , however in answer to your prob with warner bros dvd , just rip the main movie in ifo mode with dvd decryter ,this will select only the main movie and then untick the first chapter , when it has finished the ripp ,copy the video_ts ifo file and the video_ts bup file from the original and then transcode the movie, remux the m2v file , getvts sectors and check the dvd with the dvd player in ifoedit easy as that , got alot of pointers from people on this forum :D

mike4692,
You may well be right about DVDDecrypter, as far as I know, it's about the only currently suported ripper (3.1.4.0 version just released), but I "grew up" with Smartripper, so know very little about DVDDecrypter. (must give it a go one day.....)
Anyway.....
Valnar,
You PC sure looks up to the job. Suggest you look up all the relevant guides here on doom9, and you won't go far wrong.
Best of luck.

But are you keeping the menu when you do that?
I'm having horrible problems with Titanic but it's a Paramount, so it's got to be something else.
