View Full Version : Enhancement request - multiple chapters DVD

I am a newbie here, so allow me to give praise to dvd2svcd for an excellent tool that has saved me hours of time. But I have a request for consideration.

I have a number of DVDs that contain music videos. The format of these DVDs is very straight forward. Typically, it consists of one IFO followed by a few VOBs that contain multiple chapters, each chapter containing one music video. For each chapter, I create an MPG file, which can then be played in any of the PC players. I use PowerDVD and others.

With the current versions of dvd2svcd (I have 1a), this is the process - for each chapter, do the following: (assume DVD loaded)

- start dvd2svcd
- select the disc icon to read the IFO
- select the desired chapter from the dropdown box
- click GO, and choose "rip only"
- set a new directory within "Movie" to which the clip will be ripped
- hit "Ok" to create new dir
- hit "Ok" to start the ripping process
- wait for ripping to finish
- shutdown dvd2svcd

... iterate for each chapter (20 - 40 per disk)

Once I have completed this process, then I run the batch file that has been created, and go away for 24 hours. When I come back, I have my 20 - 40 MPG files that can be loaded to my playlist directories.

This whole process takes about 6 hours of work. Not bad. Better than before dvd2svcd for sure! But I'm looking to do just a bit better if I can. If anyone can suggest a better way with the existing tool, please let me know, but here is my thinking about what would help:

1. If the ripping process could be moved into the batch itself, this would significantly reduce the time required to wait for each rip. Why not trigger the internal routine ripping with a batch command, just like all of the other utilities used by dvd2svcd?

2. Why is it necessary to start and stop dvd2svcd each time you wish to select another chapter? Even on my machine, a Pentium III 933Mhz with 256MB memory, starting and stopping takes about 20 seconds. Not a big deal, but an annoyance. Wouldn't it be fairly simple to implement a "reset" button that clears dvd2svcd back to its original start up state?

Thanks for your comments and suggestions.
