Using PowerDVD to play divx or dvd i always see that the color space used is YUY2 and not YV12. Why?

I don't know of any graphics cards/drivers that support YV12 overlays.

Just tested my GeForce4 with SiSoft Sandra 2003 and it reports this card/driver combo as being YV12 capable...

also ffdshow reports my encoded movies output as yv12

I'm also using ffdshow for YV12 output. My Geforce2 card required me to disable all color spaces in ffdshow except YV12 though, otherwise it always reverted to YUY2 for some reason. I have the same card in another machine here and don't have that problem, it automatically outputs to YV12(go figure).

PowerDVD does play in YU12 but only when Hardware Accel is supported BY PowerDVD like the Radeon series from ATI.

@MaTTeR
Try,please ,disabling DivXG400 which "forces" ffdshow to output only to yuv2.Then re-check all color conversions in ffdshow configuration panel,open an YV12-avi and take a look at info: voila!
Looking forward to DivxG400 YV12 support for us GFORCE users...

george

drebel,
Thx for the tip but I've never had a need to install DivXG400 on any of the machines here. Guess I need to investigate it's function.

Heh, that's what I get for still using old Matrox cards.

It is probably a matter of Detonators version you use as well as of DirectX (DirectDraw to be more precise). Try newer detonators and see if that helps.

how do I check this?
I look at the Video System info and I can't see such. Thank you.

lighty,
I originally thought the same but verified both machines are running DX 8.1 on Win2k. Also, I have tried all the new Detonators like 40.72 and such and it gave no change. Both machines are now running 30.82 Detonators, it's the only version that seems to no have the buggy flicker filter for me:)
I enabled all color spaces last night in ffdshow and played a few clips, well it seems they opened in YV12 automatically now. Drebel might have been right about disabling all color sapces and then re-enabling them.

@MaTTeR
I am glad that it all works for you now. ;) BTW- Detonators 40.72 are now certified. (I use 41.03 though- it solved some OpenGL probs for me).

MaTTeR,
glad to hear the problem is solved,although i didn't quite understand the cause...maybe something to do with ffdshow.About detonators 4x,xx ,it seems that it's obsolete to uninstall everything else first and then reinstall them(it solved mine anyway).
I'm using detonator 40.41 with rivatuner(which allows with a very simple trick to modify the Level Of Detail(LODBiasRange)to +15 and reduces at a certain point overlay artifacts very common for Gforce cards.It is ,however,possible that you might need a slight sharpening in your encodings (edge-based),but the final result is more than satisfying (for tv-out tvtool 6.8.2 has its own flickering filter...)

george

@lighty,
Maybe I'll give the 41.03 builds a try now, didn't know they were floating aroudn yet. Have you tried the flicker filter with them?
@drebel,
It seems more of an ffdshow issue I was dealing with on the 1 machine, like I say I never had a problem on the other PC though. Oh well, all seems to work nicely now.
This Level Of Detail settings sounds very interesting, I shall investigate it further tonight. The 6.8x builds of TVtool doesn't seem to work properly in regards to the flicker filters on my HTPC for some reason. I've tried them but I always revert back to good ol 6.5x:)
@all
Has anyone noticed more ringing or blocking artifacts when playing back in YV12? Maybe it just my eyes but it seems to me that YV12 playback increases ringing artifacts on GF2 cards.
