Loosing picture quality using virtualdub and subrip subtitles:eek: .
I'm using dvd2avi splitting Vobs to avi and sound. Subrip to get subtitles, encoding TMPGEnc to SVCD.
Has anybody any idea what go's wong:D

What codec are you rendering to? And the way you described your steps is very confusing.
Is it:
dvdripper? (which one?) -> dvd2avi -> avisynth and besweet(for audio) -> virtualdub (with a subtitle filter in there) -> avi (compressed/lossy codec?) -> tmpgenc

I'm mostly using smartripper or dvddecripter all last versions.
Using dvd2avi with divx 50.2 compression to get a avi and sound file.
Using subrip last version to get subtitles out of the vob files.
Virtualdub with subrip subtitle filter (avery lee) codec divx 50.2 for compression for the avi file and save as avi file.:(
Using this avi file with the sound file in TMPGEnc and get a SVCD format.:)
When I ripp the files. Use dvd2avi to get a .d2v project and using .d2v in TMPGEnc with the sound file I get a SVCD picture that is in Quality a bit less than DVD quality. I do not have to use the divx codec.:D
When I use virtualdub with the subrip filter I have subtitles in the avi file but when I encode them in TMPGnc I have a quality loss in the fast movements mostly the lines getting somehow dirty. :stupid:

Ah, that's your problem then, I would never compress to divx and then again to mpeg2. You have two options:
1) make an avs with ivtc in it, and also the TextSub filter with your ssa file and open that up in TMPGEnc
2) if you have to use vdub, use the frameserver under the file menu or use a lossless codec like huffyuv (if you have the room)

The quality is bad because you are compressing it to divx TWICE before encoding it to mpeg. You shouldn't be compressing it at all before you encode it to mpeg.

I thank you both and will try all of your suggestions. As you know it takes some time. When I know more I'll be back.:scared:

Hello All,
I've tried to make an SVCD with subtitles like this as adviced with out compression. I followed the guids dvd2avi and then the TMPGEnc.
I made a .d2v file and a sound file in dvd2avi. I used VFAPIC to make a pseudo avi file. Made with subripper subtitles and started virtualdub loaded the pseudo avi and ssa subt.
As in the guids I started frameserver, saved as avi, keep virtualdub running and started TMPGEnc and encoded the avi and sound.
What did I get? A nice SVCD without the subtitles.
The file I did save in frameserver was 1kb.
What do I wong?
The guid I followed was to my very confusing.

Not sure I remember how big the frameserver file should be, but it won't be a huge file since it's just the connector between vdub and whatever program you use to open it.
You might have better luck with avisynth. Just make an avs that looks like:
LoadPlugin("C:\location\of\mpeg2dec.dll")
LoadPlugin("C:\location\of\textsub.vdf")
MPEG2Source("C:\location\of\my.d2v")
Telecide() #if ivtc is needed
Decimate() #if ivtc is needed
TextSub("C:\location\of\my.ssa")

Hello All,
I'v tried to make a SVCD with subtitles following the dvd2avi guid and the TMPGEnc guid without compression as adviced.
Made an .d2v file and a sound file in dvd2avi.
Made an pseudo avi of the .d2v file.
Made subtitles with subrip.
Started virtualdub, loaded the pseudo avi, subrip filter and ssa file.
Started frameserver followed the leed and saved as avi. I kept virtualdub running as mentioned in the guids.
As mentioned in the guids started TMPGnc and encoded the .d2v and sound file. Got a nice SVCD in good quality but without the subtitles.
De avi file I saved in the frameserver was 1kb.
Can anybody tell me what do wong:D

Try the avisynth method first, it's a lot easier, faster, and it's a method that will work 100%.

@Buddy
...started TMPGnc and encoded the .d2v and sound file...
I think this is wrong. TMPG can encode directly from d2v file, but in this way the encoded stuff will lack the frameserving (with subtitles!) from vdub. In my opinion you should load in TMPG the saved frameserved avi. But the best way to do DVD to SVCD is the DVD2SVCD program (with TMPG). Good luck.

I hope you see this because I can't voor some reason I get the old page on the forum site with my last reply. I only see your reply via e-mail outlook express. That's the reason I placed my message twice.
When I get the right page I come back.

If you like to explain me. I have never workt with this program. I made a file with what you wrote bud don't know what to do with it.
I can see again:scared:
I have tried dvd2vcd some years ago but the vcd I did get I thought some how sucked. Maybe I did something wrong I don't know but I will try again, maybe the program did get better. But first I try the avisynth method when I get help.
Thanks;)

Just put something similar to what I had in notepad and save it as yourfile.avs and then open that up in tmpg where you'd normally open an avi, d2v, etc.

That does not work neither in TMPGEnc and Virtualdub both programs tell me can not open or unsupported.

If you want avs files to work, you should have instaled avisynth in your computer. Then it will work.
Good luck.
P.S. You can download it at the download section of doom9.org

Ofcourse I did install avisynth.
But I have all programs working with virtualdub and the frameserver with it and have my first SVCD with subtitles. In very good quality.
Would like to learn how avisynth works to learn though.
And maybe some advice to get a more better quality picture if that is possible.
Thanks to all who helped me.:)

Odd that VDub wouldn't open your avs, and I've never had problems with TMPG opening it either. Try this avs:
version()
If that doesn't work, then avisynth is installed wrong. The avisynth dll needs to be in winnt (or windows)\system32 and you also need to right click on the inf and click install. Also post what version you're using.

I'm using the one from the doom site. It is a self installing program and the dll is the windows\system32. I can't find any inf installation file in the avisynth directory. So I think everything is installed.
I'm using windows xp pro.:(
The reason that at first the virtualdub frameserver did not work was that in the guids your told to insert de .d2v you saved in the dvd2avi. Well I had to insert the file saved in the frameserver.
Furthermore I did the proxy off thing of virtualdub. Don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Avisynth is working now but for some reason it does not accept my subtitler.vdf. With the remark it's not an avisynthblabla.
Idea's pleez.

How are you trying to import it?
LoadPlugin("C:\location\of\subtitler.vdf")
or
LoadVirtualDubPlugin("C:\location\of\subtitler.vdf","Subtitler")
Subtitler("C:\location\of\my.ssa")
Or did you put it in your autoloading plugin dir?

Hi
This is what I tryed.:(
LoadPlugin("C:\location\subtitler.vdf")
Subtitler("C:\location\my.ssa")
Avisynth says Subtitler.vdf is not a Avisynth 1.0 plugin
LoadVirtualdubPlugin("C:\virtualdub\plugins\subtitler.vdf")
did not work either. Avisynth says subtitler.vdf is not a Avisynth plugin.
LoadVirtualdubplugin("C:virtualdub\plugins\subtitler.vdf","Subtitler") Unable to load
LoadPlugins("C:location\subtitler.vdf","Sutitler") is not a Avisynth plugin
LoadVirtualdubPlugin("C:location\of\subtitle.vdf") Scripterror Invalid Arguments to function "LoadVirtualdubPlugin"

Try TextSub that comes with VobSub, it can open ssa's and I'm sure it will work 100% with avisynth.
