View Full Version : Possible bug, too small bbMPEGCDSize with frameselection

I havent been able to find anything about this using search, and a browse through the last couple of pages so if it has been discussed before I am truly sorry.

Well, I am converting the Hellsing anime series and using framselection to seperate the episodes and previews into seperate files. I ripped it with internal routines and started converting like normal, but realized I forgot to set the cdsizes in the frame selection, so quit and restarted without ripping, so I dont know if thats the problem or not, but maybe its important. So now im setting each episode to a cdsize of 395 and previews to cdsize 10, and all starts like normal, all bitrates are correctly set (assuming anyways, they end up at ~ the correct sizes). At the start the bbMPEGCDSize is set at 800 in the project file, and all goes like normal until it gets to cutting and muxing. Then for some reason it sets cutpoint to 5 and I end up with hundreds of bbmpeg_muxed files, then it starts demuxing them for some reason and eventually get an access violation in kernel32.dll...

I did find a way to fix this though, when bbmpeg stage starts, close dvd2svcd to cancel it and close the bbmpeg window. Open the project file and change bbMPEGCDSize=5 to like bbMPEGCDSize=800, then recover from muxing and cutting, and all goes right.

Tho I have no idea why it sets bbMPEGCDSize to 5 when i put in 395 in the frame selection dialogue... I have tried this several times, restarted and everything, its easily reproducible on my two computers. So im thinking theres a small bug in there somewhere.

Anyways I just wanted to point this out, and to thank DVD2SVCD for his great tool, and especially the addition of frame selection. THANK YOU DVD2SVCD!!

Most likely it is due to using crash recovery. Crash Recovery is primarily for that recovering after a crash and not making changes. Some changes you can get away with while others cause issues. That is why this topic is covered in the Q+A.

It may have nothing to do with that, but until it's proven otherwise I believe that was your problem.

That makes sense, but im not using crash recovery until it gets to the bbmpeg stage, and then only to change that line in the project file. I deleted everything in the folder except the vobs and the ifo from the original rip, and started a whole new dvd2svcd project selecting that ifo. I sent the vobs and the ifo to my other computer across the network and started another dvd2svcd project again, same problem.

Im not sure if it does this if you rip at the same time, as I did several encodes doing the ripping at the same time, and didnt have a problem (but they were with different cds, and cd sizes set at 800 on all of them). I still have the source dvd, so i'll try it again with ripping again this time.

It doesn't matter what stage you use crash recovery at. If you change things not everything always works correctly.
The BBmpeg part is where cd size starts to matter for more then bitrate.
If your bitrate was fine before you used crash recovery, but your cd size setting was wrong after you used it, what does that tell you?

No your not understanding (or im not articulationg, im an american high school grad after all, not very good at english). It screws up the cdsize if i dont do crash recovery, if i let it go all the way through, i get hundreads of bbmpeg_muxed files, it starts demuxing them, and crashes with an access violation in kernel32.dll. Using the crash recovery and manually changing the cd size in the project file was my fix that im doing now.

Ok so let me word this differently. Maybe we were both on different trains of thought and finally they hit the station at the same time?

So you are saying that you set the cd size to 395 from the very beginning, before you ripped the files or anything?

Once one thing happens the d2s file is written and the procedure is set. Any change of that from step one to the end can cause an issue.

If it happens from step one before you did a rip or anything then post your DVD2SVCD_Log.txt files using cut and paste. Although I fear this might be a bug, but we shall see.

This line in your first post confuses me.
so quit and restarted without ripping,

Are you using crash recovery to continue or selecting the IFO off the HD?

If you just selected the IFO off the HD did you erase all the files, but the VOB and IFO files?

Leaving old files around is also known to cause issues.

Ok, I think we are gettin there now. My procedure that cuased the ridiculous amount of bbmpeg files has been this:
1: The vob files and ifo file are already on my hardrive, so no ripping.
2: Open dvd2svcd turn off ripping, go to conversion tab and select the ifo file, check frame selection and start conversion.
3: Select the correct sub stream, and then select the ranges and set episode sizes to 395 and previews to 10.
4: Everything goes good, correct bitrates and everything up until muxing starts. It displays cutpoint as 5 and produces lots of muxed files, starts to demux them after a while and crashes with an access violation in kernel32.dll

This is the procedure for my fix:
1-3: Same as above.
4: When muxing starts, close dvd2svcd (there is no cancel button that im aware of, so this is the only way to make it stop), and close the bbmpeg file.
5: Open the project file and change the bbmpegcdsize thingy to something high like 800, open dvd2svcd and use crash recovery to start from muxing and cutting, then the rest goes good.

I dont have the log file anymore, but i'll try it again without ivtcing or anything, should be done within the hour, will post then. I'll also see if this problem still occurs if you rip from the dvd instead of using the files that dvd2svcd had previously ripped.

wait, i did see some oddities under the video encoding section. the first video part i see there has these settings:

Seconds: 22.02
CalcMPEGStream: 819086464.00
Frames: 450
CDSize: 800.00
Number of CDs: 1
Cut point 794.00

But in the frame selection there was nothing below 500 frames, and the first selection was an episode 22 minutes in length, alot more frames than 450, and had a cdsize of 395 not 800. But the first selection is listed second, and the rest are listed correctly, just bumped down by this erroneous first entry.

And the cut points are all listed correctly here. I wonder, does dvd2svcd just assume the cutpoint for the last entry here is the cutpoint for all the bbmpeg instances?

Edit: Oh and another interesting tid bit, the cutpoint dvd2svcd sets for each bbmpeg instance is exactly the same. Even when I stop it and restart manually changing it to 800, all of them start with a cutpoint of 800.

Could you try a few things?

First can you completely un-install DVD2SVCD and install 1.10.1 and the .1a update again.

If it happens again. Erase the VOB files and IFO's and start from scratch.

If it still happens un-install 1.10.1a and re-install 1.09B3.

I would like to know whether it's a new introduced bug, an issue with this one rip or something else. I will try to reproduce the issue myself when I get some time.

I have a work around if nothing helps.

You need to figure out what your Avg bitrate will be for the video of the length you want. It might sound complicated, but really it takes two seconds and is easy.

Before you do this make sure you have set your audio and subtitles the way you want them so the bitrate will be accurate.
What you do is go to the very first section on the bitrate tab where it says for minutes ???-50 USE 1 and change the 50 to the exact length of your video you want to encode and then change the 800 to 395 or whatever you want the size of the video to be. Make sure to find this by using WinDVD or PowerDVD and don't trust the box. Then simply place the highest bitrate number on the section that shows the bitrate range at the end in the MAX AVG bitrate setting at the bottom of the bitrate tab. Then change the time and cd size back to default. Now if your video no longer fits within the time in that first section make sure that the section it does fit in does not increase the number of cd's.

What this will do is force the video to stay within the strictor bitrate boudaries and even though the cd size is set to 800 it can't get that big since you have dropped the bitrate. In the end you should end up with a muxed file close to 395mb's. If it's smaller then you want simply raise the bitrate a bit and if it's too large simply lower the MAX AVG bitrate a bit. Once you get the hang of it you get a feeling for what is right.

Yea I guess that would work, its just frustrating. I mean, all the bitrates are set correctly, if I mux them myself the files come out to the right sizes, and if I manually change the bbmpegcdsize at the right moment, they come out right.

Anyway, yea the problem arises from a different dvd ripped using internal routines on a new installation of dvd2svcd fully updated. It seems to come from my use of frame selection, judging from the readme.txt and the use of a single variable that determines the cutpoint for bbmpeg, the frame selection feature was never meant to cut more than one segment (or at least ones with the same cd size). All the bbmpeg instances get set to the cut point of the last segment, so im testing if i switch the last episode and preview, hopefully it will set the cutpoint to 390 or higher. Im thinking you can split the selections up like this as long as the one with the largest cd size is listed last in the dialogue.

So im gunna test out my little theory while i get a couple hours sleep. hopefully i dont wake up to a folder filled with bbmpeg_muxed files again :)

Well, no joy. Got home to a folder with 509 objects in it. Its prolly my fualt, im using frame selection in a manner that it was never intended to be used. Anyway, I did find a slightly better workaround, just use frameselection to encode the eps with a cdsize of 395. Then when thats done, go back and rip the previews with a cdsize of 10. I ended up with 2 eps and 2 previews per disc, just how I wanted.

Im sorry for spammin the board like this, no bug, just me raping the frame selection in a way it didnt appreciate :)

But seriously Dvd2svcd, thank you for this great tool, we all really appreciate your work!

Please post your dvd2svcd.ini file here and I'll try what you did with the frameselection and see if I can find a solution.
