I've read somewhere that Lame is bad below 128 kbps. What I wonder is: Is it possible to convert the ac3 file manually using say Fraunhofer's codec, and then Gordian Knot will discover it and include it in the final encoding?

It is possible to encode the mp3 with the Fraunhofer codec, but it would have to be done manually with a suitable tool.

But there is no reason for this. I don't know where you read that Lame is bad below 128 kbps, but generally I'd say Lame is considered the best mp3 encoder, no matter what bitrates used.

Below 128 Kbps, LAME will, by default, use a 44.1Khz sampling rate. Dolby Digital audio on DVDs use a 48Khz sampling rate. If you go below 128Kbps and want to prevent the possibility of having audio de-sync from the video, use the parameter --resample 48.

I often go below 128 Kbps with monaural sound tracks -- especially on old movies shot in 4:3 aspect ratio.

You'll find more information on this in Gordian Knot's "Help" tab.
