View Full Version : New version of ImgTool

I've just finished a new version of the ImgTool. I also try to include the NeroAPI to burn the DVD. Of course - I have taken NO code from Derrow... but I can't test completely the compatibility to standalone players - it works on my own...
And... the ImgTool is free.
I have also included 2 newer versions of the MUX- and DeMUX libs.
If someone like the old Tool with Image creation, it's already there for download.

Yes, I LOVE it. And use it a lot. Thanks for your work.
I do a lot of image gen from ImgTool, then burn with DVDDecrypter.
You did well to add the Burn feature even if DVDBurn.
To all people having trouble with pixelisation at the end of the DVD, try making an image with ImgTool and burn the image with Nero or DVDDecrypter or Gear DVD Pro. It solve LOTS of problem.
Do not forget, even if it's freeware, you can donate a few bucks for this proggy if you like it.
I will do it, but I need to wait a bit as my DVD investments for this month already gave me some debate with my wife :-)

I also have the same problem :(
I found that if we uncheck the "Reallocate VIDEO_TS ..." box, the soft starts to burn, but as we need it to place the files on the right place on the DVD media, I don't think that this is the solution.
Doesn't this problem as nothing to do with the fact of being used in a DVD+RW drive ? Does anyone used it with a DVD+RW and had the same problem ?

I think more to a small bug in the proggy.
'VTS_02_2.VOB' is to be reallocated in my exemple, but there is no 'VTS_02_2.VOB' in my DVD.
Another question, is : How can I select the burn speed ? I have hacked 2X4all firmware but my low cost DVD-R need 1X burning.

Seems like NeroAPI looks for an existing VTS_02_2.vob file.
What files are used for an VTS should be stored in the matching ifo file...
Is this an original VTS set or a ripped one?

I have included a write speed select Drop-Down-Box. Just follow the link in the first post to download the new version.
...the other problems:
I've only a Ricoh MP5120 DVD+RW drive so I can't test anything with DVD-R/RW. Maybe uncheck the "High Compatibility Mode". This mode only burns more than 1GB of data to the DVD.
I've made following tests with success:
Con Air (DVD5 Pal),
Blade I (IfoEdit Movie only Guide, Pal)
...some self authored DVDs (DVDMaestro)
Is there someone "out there" who has tested the burn functions with success?!
...really few comments at this time!

Sorry for the delay, I was not @home this Week end.
OK. Concerning the first project I tried with your tool, I didn't insist and made an image with your previous tool version then burn with DVD Decrypter.
Concerning authoring, I am not too bad with, and feel my IFO/VOB are compliant and should not be a problem.
Anyway, I will do a test on a DVD5 as soon as I get one, as doing it on a DVD9 authored to DVD5 will give nothing.
I did another project and this time use your latest version. Thnaks a lot for the Burn Speed Feature.
I had to unckeck both case Reallocate VIDEO_TS .. and ...optimize DVD+R (I have a DVD-R) to allow to burn, and gives a nice result (@X1).
I only to do some testing (menu, jump, next track, previous on my standalone and results are OK ieven at the end of the movie.
But I need to watch the whole movie to give a final status.
So thanks, seems OK for me, will confirm soon.
For future releases :
Is that possible to allow to burn from any directory, doing a VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS on the DVD, even if not present on the HD.
Not a real problem, so if difficult to add, forget it.
A very good idea to me, but not sure it's DVD compliant and needs probably lots of work, would be to modify sector addresses in IFOs and burn as needed, in order to burn at the beginning of the DVD the main VTS with the movie, even it is VTS04.
The idea is to avoid read errors on the main movie and prefer, if any error at the end of the media, that it freeze and pixelate on bonus rather on the movie.

Hi,
I am trying to write an image of MI2 to dvd. The directory structure works fine on PowerDVD and IFOedit is happy with the structure ( get VTS ) . However when I create the image using imgtool(0.89) and write the disk out it no longer plays properly it does'nt even start in my player. I have written many dvd's out using this method without a hitch usually movie only but not explicitly .
The DVD contains the menu structure, with large VOBs removed but with the IFO's files present keeping the set 1,2,3,4 etc but I have done this before without issue.
After I have created the image if I check it with ifoedit ( originally ok ) the struct has changed. It seems that the imgtool program 0.89 is changing the structure.
If I use 0.99.1 will this change the dvd structure ifo's etc?
I think perhaps the only way I can proceed is to write from a directory but as we all know this causes compatiblity issues itself any ideas? I will try 99.1 tonight...

@drafty
The NeroAPI (ImgTool 0.99.x) will check the structure but will change nothing if everything is ok. The only thing it should made is to place the files in right order on the disc...
If there is any problem with the NeroAPI I'll disable the included VIDEO_TS routine and make the right order for burning by myself ;) !

Changes:
Version 0.99.2 / 19.11.2002
============================
- new DVD ISO build function
+ sort files
+ generates VIDEO_TS dir if needed
+ no AUDIO_TS dir is needed anymore
- Reallocation of VIDEO_TS is disabled by default
(needed for burning uncomplete DVD Rool DIRs)
Note:
if you check the "Reallocate VIDEO_TS ..." box, the NeroAPI
will test your IFO/BUP/VOB files. If you have ripped or
stripped something, it is possible, that the API generates
an error. This only means that the DVD Root structure
is not 100 percent standard conform. In that case UNCHECK this box.

I have to admit that I'm a little confused...
Please correct me if I'm wrong:
1. ImgTool v0.8x uses a DLL (from DVD-Wise) to create a DVD compliant image file from a file structure with VIDEO_TS/AUDIO_TS folder. I used this method a lot and recorded that image file in a second step with DVD Decrypter.
2. ImgTool v0.9x uses the NeroAPI to record directly from file structure to your recorder. Thus no intermediate image file is generated.
As there are a lot of problem reports concerning DVD recording with NERO: What's the difference between method 2 and using NERO itself to record your DVD files?
Hope that someone can shed some light on this...

@Coujo : I played the whole movie and bonuses etc.. and the result is perfect. No pixelisation, nothing. I have two more to do soon (re-encoding at present) and I will try the latest 0.992.
@sundance : I think Imgtool only use the API to access the burner, but do not use the whole product at all.
The difference ? Quite easy for me. Nero gives me sometimes error on my files, even if well authored the movie and correct VTS address, burn and I get pixelisation at the end of the movie..
In fact, you can read many posts where people explain they get very good result doing an image, then, burning the img file with any burning tool. This new version keep the same benefit but avoid the boring and space consumming task of doing the image.
This will also win98 users to burn an image, as they can't do more than 4gb files on FAT32
sundance
20th November 2002, 16:03
klona,
I think Imgtool only use the API to access the burner...
If that's the case, then
a) What's the use of those options to "re-allocate" the files (same as NERO has)?
b) What algorithm/library is used to compile the image (imglib.dll is no longer within the ImgTool package)?
Maybe CouJo should know?
CouJo
20th November 2002, 16:41
ImgTool uses the functions form the NeroAPI, also Reallocate (if you check this).
The file structure is created by ImgTool self. There is no image file. Only a list of files in right order is created.
Of course, you can use Nero. The idea was to create a simple way to burn a DVD - nothing else.

So, if some dvd-rs burned with nero don't work in certain players, it's also certain that dvd-rs burned with the new imgetool will also not work in the same settop players ?
CouJo
20th November 2002, 22:11
Maybe... to be sure, the only thing you can do is to test it. You will ever get problems on some players. It doesn't matter which burn program you use - one standalone player will work, another not...
... you can also use the "old" ImgTool and burn the image with your favorite burn app.
It's impossible to make a 100 percent solution.

Will this current version (0.99.2) include the JACKET_P directory if it exists at the same level as the VIDEO_TS directory? Something like this:

'target_directory' is the directory specified to ImgTool.

The library which creates the image in version 0.8x sorts the directories wrong. At the disc the VIDEO_TS dir comes first, but it should be the AUDIO_TS dir...
...but the NeroAPI has also its own problems. I couldn't say: "use only this one"! If vesion 0.89 works ok for you, use it. But you can also try the 0.99.x, maybe it works also for you.

Hi,
I tried burning with 99.3 last night A Bugs Life ( PAL ) onto a Verbatim R/W the resulting disk did not play in my XBOX but ok on my Sony standalone. I have used this same DVD-R/W before on the XBOX without issue.
I used dvd decryptor to write an ISO image of Bugs Life with success on to a DVD-R the day before. I must admit though that the previous version 89 could not handle bugs life either. Simply stated illegal navigation when played from the image using IFOedit and nothing when played from a stand alone ( wierd , no stripping btw just region free ). This behavior though is just like what used to happen when I burned in the past with Nero using the directory method.
I have to try with DVD-R's but i'll keep you posted.

It would be cool if you could add the old image file type back into the new releases of imgtool.
As of right now the new imgtool only creates .NRG files which cannot be loaded by daemon tools NOR can it be burned by other image burning software (I used stomp recordnow max because it allows me to burn using DMA).
However, the OLD imgtool has a bug where it'll crash IF i use a file name that is too long. This is not the case with the newer imgtool, as you probably fixed it.
So it would be great if you could include an option to must make a normmal .img or .iso file with your new imgtool.

Since most people has "Get VTS Sectors" already done, the default is unchecked. There is also a compatibility problem in some cases if you check this checkbox.

One small problem I'm having with ImgTool .99.4 (and the previous versions) is that when I put in a DVD+RW that is not new and out of the box - it refuses to burn.
It will burn a DVD+R.
It would be nice if it asked whether I wanted to overwrite what is there like Nero does.
If I try to quick Erase it, that works, but then when I try to burn the erased disk, it says 'please insert a CDR or just click ok if you are using Image Recorder.
Am I missing something obvious?
BTW - when burning an image, it might be nice to default to the VOLUME name that was input.
But, all in all, a great and very useful program.
CouJo
13th December 2002, 08:04
Hm.., it's possible to add such a message box for not empty DVD+RWs.
...but then when I try to burn the erased disk, it says 'please insert a CDR or just click ok if you are using Image Recorder.'
This shouldn't happen. Is the DVD reloaded after erasing? This message pops up if you try to burn a DVD Root which doesn't fit to your inserted media.
BTW - when burning an image, it might be nice to default to the VOLUME name that was input
...no problem!

CouJo - I'm using a Memorex DVD+RW drive.
I'm not sure what you means by'Is the DVD reloaded after erasing'. I believe that ImgTool said that it was erased with no problem. I don't believe I removed it and then inserted it.
"try to burn a DVD Root which doesn't fit to your inserted media. "
This is not the problem, it was a few 100k smaller than the max size. Instead of burning to +RW, I just burned to an image - and then used Nero - what I always do with +RW disks and your program.
When I burn the ImgTool image with Nero on +RW, it always gives a msg (I forget exact msg) about the media not being blank and asks whether I want to overwrite it. Then it always burns with no problem.
As you are using Nero's API, possibly exacty the same sequence is possible with ImgTool. I don't have to format with Nero - it just does it automatically.

CouJo - I usedthe main links - download ImgTool - and the Winzip file was named .99.4 - not the .99.5 as expected.
Thanks in advance for the modifications! It just keeps getting better and better!

Coujo,
How about this for a future version of Imgtools. If burning with reallocation checked fails, it automatically burns with it unchecked. You would have just a message in between stating that burn failed and it will switch to the other procedure.

@dvdWannabe
You are right. I've only updated the description and forgot the link. Argh... is fixed now.
@2COOL
This is possible - maybe in version 0.99.6 ;) !

@ CouJo,
Are DVDs created with your latest Imgtool similar to creating in Nero a DVD-Rom (UDF/ISO) with UDF 1.02 as prescibed in Derrow's site: http://mpucoder.kewlhair.com/derrow/nero.html
