newbie questions on minidv

I have a video on a vhs tape wich I want to make a svcd out of.
Also I want a menu on the svcd which can go to certain parts of the video. The camcorder I am using is a sony TRV-25 mini-dv.

Basically I have read many tutorials on the internet and posts on this board about capturing and encoding and Im just ending up confused. :(

So far I have transfered the video onto the mini-dv tape via the analogue input. It is 44 minutes long and I want it all to fit on 1 cd. I have played around with capturing clips of the video and saving them via my firewire card.

Questions:

What programs should I use to capture and what type of avi file should I save to granted that I have access to adobe premiere 6.5 and ulead mediastudio 6.0 for editing.

What encoder should I use for encoding the edited clips and making the menu for the svcd.

Are there any other things I should do to produce a good quality svcd.

You could use Premiere's or MediaStudio's capture programs. I always use MediaStudio Pro's (V6.5) capture proggie without problems. Many people swear on Scenalyzer, though.

What encoder should I use for encoding the edited clips and making the menu for the svcd.
Use TMPGEnc (free) or CinemaCraft Encoder (CCE, ~2000$).

Are there any other things I should do to produce a good quality svcd.
Try DVD2SVCD. It has an "AVI2SVCD" mode, and it can automate the process to get excellent results. You should deinterlace your video for better compression.

I have created a timeline in adobe premiere 6.5 with an edited clip.
What format do I export to so I can encode the file in TMPGEnc.

When I export to Microsoft Dv Avi TMPGEnc will not open the file.
Its says it is not supported.

I guess all you need to do is install a VfW DV codec like Mainconcept, Canopus, Panasonic, or Adaptec.

Yup same as bb here. I use the panasonic codec.....
Save it as AVI. then encode it using CCE if you have it...




If you cant open it in TMPGEnc that is probably as bb says because of codec.


if you are still having problems shout up and Ill try to help you...although most DV stuff I do it to DVD :)

O.K. after 1 week i still can't get anything on DVD.

My question. When i convert the MS DV avi file to mpeg2 using Tmpenc how do i get this on DVD. Just burn it with nero ? Do i have to put it in a video_ts folder ?

Sorry, i know that's very newbie :(

It's not that simple.

You need a DVD authoring software. There are many. From tens to thousands of dollars.

I know that, i'm using adobe premiere. I have lots of experience in vcd/svcd and burning dvd iso files.

The thing that freaks me out is that i can't find a good combination to get my home made dv movies on dvd. Trust me i've spent countless hours last week converting/burning/testing.

I've downloaded the canopus decoder and now when i try to decode the MS DV avi file it splits them in 001 002 pieces :confused: .

I really don't know what's the best method, i've tried everything and this is very confusing if you don't get it right.

:( sigh :(

Premiere is not a DVD authoring software.

Ulead DVD workshop is an authoring software right ? pinnacle blablabla (forgot the name) is another authoring software right ?

The trouble is i need to find a way to convert the MS Avi file to another editable avi file (please look at my canopus problem above).

It's not necessary to convert your AVI to another AVI - and not desirable either. You need to install a DV codec, and after this being installed properly, you'll be able to open your AVI file in TMPGEnc.

Make sure you use DVD compliant settings in TMPGEnc and encode to MPEG-2. Use any DVD authoring tool to create the DVD file structure from your MPEG-2 file and burn on DVD.

Sorry I misunderstood you. I thought that because of your post above, you did not know you need a DVD authoring software.

OK, I do a lot of converting from my DV cam to DVD this is how I do it


Capture in Premier 6.5
edit video (AVI) in premier to something I like.
Export from premier as AVI

Extract the audio from the AVI using Virtual dub (open the avi then go file > save Wav)

convert the wav to MP2 using 2lame (I actually use the besweet GUI but that is not necessary)

I now use CCE to convert the AVI to MPV

OK so now I have a audio track (MP2) and a video track (MPV)

Create a menu screen/s in photoshop

Using Maestro I import the video and audio and menu screens and author the dvd...this results in video_ts and audio_ts folders which I burn using Prassi or nero.


Obviously this is a very quick and basic glance over the steps, if you need more in depth drop me a line and ill try to help. :)

But CCE wont' open files larger than 2 gigs. Whenever I capture DV video from my camcorder its typically 8 or 9 gigs long.
Do you just split them up into 2 gig pieces before opening them in CCE?
Why not use AviSynth?

Hmmm I didnt have a problem opening the files and mine were 20+gigs (typically 24-26 gig) im using version 2.66 of CCE but I dont know if that makes a difference. I used 2.64 before this and it was ok as well.

Ahh intersting.
well i only have cce 2.62 and i found that it does appear to be able to open my 5 gig DV avi file :)
it did a pretty good job encoding it too.
