Just occured to me that all these drop-outs, banding or whatever could be eliminated if the camera companies gave up pre-historical magnetic tapes. Why not use plain old hard disks.

Can you imagine that? No recording heads, no playback heads, no transport. Pure digital video and sound directly to the hard disk!

Size would be smaller probably.

I bet it is even cheaper than the current mechanism.

Let's say you'd use an 2GB IBM MicroDrive to keep size and power consumption small. Guess how much DV video you could store considering the average DV datarate of 3.6 MB/s? (The answer is: about 9 minutes).
