View Full Version : too many frames dropped, why??

ok, i've read through all the forums and all the threads and have found nothing...
i'm using cce to re-encode the video at a lower bitrate
have followed the guide on doom9.org step by step
when i go to reauthor it get's about 25% to 50% done and gives me the error too many frames dropped. this is both with using pulldown.exe and with not using it. also i've tryed without dts stream and without subtitle stream, same problem...
does anybody know why this would be, i'm running xp, latest beta of ifoedit, cce 2.50, dvd2avi 1.76, vobedit 0.6
i would really hate to have to start splitting my backups to 2 dvd-r's.
although, i have successfully re-encoded and authored spiderman and casino(r1) using these same methods, thanx...

have you had success with win2000 possibly, because it seems that xp & 2000 are the only programs available to use ntsf(i use a lot of files over 4gb). if 2000 is a possibility that would be awesome...

could it be related to the issue mentioned in http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=38194 ?
What if you only use one audio stream and no subtitles? What was the max bitrate you used in CCE?
xisix
17th November 2002, 12:10
was using max bitrate at 9800
i tryed authoring with just ac3, ac3 + dts, ac3 + subtitle, dts + subtitle, just dts, same thing every time...
and i've gotten it to work twice before, i just don't get it

I have a feeling its just going to come down to how some original DVD's were made. I have a feeling that there is something in the subs that just aren't right or are different then what this thing wants and ultimately it will fail. The first DVD I was playing around with to backup I got it to work just fine, then I tried bad company with subs and it failed. If I remove the subs it will process everything. I haven't burned it yet though to see what it will look like yet.

I have the same feeling.
I've been playing a bit with Star Wars, Episode II, with the following results:
Video Only: no error
Video + English Audio: no error
Video + 2 audio streams: no error
Video + 2 audio streams + 1 subtitle stream: too many frames
Until here, I can understand that the additional subpicture stream is too much for the DVD capacity... But let's continue:
Video + English Audio + 1 subtitle stream: too many frames
Video + no audio + 1 subtitle stream: too many frames
So it seems there must be something wrong with the subtitles or maybe a bug in IFOEdit?
Best regards,

my experiences where quite different. I could add 14 subtitle streams without any problems but when I went beyond 3 audio streams I got a too many frames dropped error. Same with Gladiator.. I could add subs and all 3 AC3 streams but when I added the DTS I got a too many frames dropped. Same thing with only one AC3 and DTS regardless of the subs.

In case anyone is still reading this thread, I think I've found the answer. I had exactly the same problem, and I only had one audio track (no subs), and the audio was even only two channel. I then noticed that the bitrate (when properties were viewed under the windows explorer) was 1500 kbps, a little over-the-top for such a simple stream, but I guess some studios do it that way. Anyway, it occurred to me that I had encoded the video with a max bitrate of 9800, and the two together could have added to mere than 10 Mbps, so I simply re-encoded (using CCE), and this time set the max to 8500, allowing 1500 for the audio, and sure enough, the problem went away. The reason you don't see it until some way into the movie is that the bitrate has to actually reach the maximum before ifoedit balks, which won't happen until you get alot of high action frames. So there you go, just rack down your max bitrate and re-encode and the problem is solved.

I think this are two different problems. I've lowered the max bitrate even to 7500 and I'm having the same problem. If I mux video and 2 AC3 audio streams it works. If I mux video, no audio, and only 1 subpicture stream, it fails.
To Derrow: Is there a way to activate debug output in IfoEdit and see which was the cause of the problem? (i.e. which were the bitrates that caused the overflow, information like the bitrates for each of the streams at the moment of the failure would be very useful to see whether the problem was related to Video, Audio or Subpicture streams).
Best regards,

Just in case gilaboy is still wondering, stream E0 (that's a hexadecimal number) is the video stream.

ahhhhh so there something wrong with my video stream then?
question if you put your movie in DVD2AVI for NTSC region 1
which setting do you clickon None/Force Film/swap field order?
i always klick on None but one time i tryed the Force film , but still. and somebody here have the XXXcensoredXXX on CCE SPT 264?
because the DVD2AVI 1.77 doesn't work on CCE sp 250
moderator notice: asking for cracks is prohibited. Plus, dvd2avi 1.77 frameserving via avisynth doesn't work because mpeg2dec.dll doesn't support it, there's no problem with CCE.

Before you all start looking into the wrong direction.
As far as I know it there are 2 problems with this movie.
1) First of all, the movie contains different angles. So if you rip and and encode again in CCE, you will see in the beginning the two angles together wich is not that good. The image seems to stutter, but it is sowly due to the multiple angle fact. This will come back somewhere in the middle of the movie.
2) There are many reported problems with the sound that it cannot be imported into DVD Maestro without an error. The reason for this is that LucasFilm probably used some trick into the audio stream to prevent decent ripping; Use ac3fix on the audio stream and it will work fine.

I have been trying to use CCE in combination with IfoEdit0.95, but as soon as I want to join the video and audio stream with a subtitle then I end up with dropped frames, stream arrives too late.
I have tried this for Star Wars (PM, same problem goes for AOTC) and I for LOTR (SEE), for wich I'm trying to combine both DVD's to one (I just hate chaning DVD's half way a movie). These projects always end up with the same problem (dropped frames, stream arrive too late). I have been checking Doom9 some time but I haven't found a solution yet.
Can someone give me clue? Or is this a bug in IfoEdit0.95?

hi
same here, yesterday i tried to do one and i thought now it's going good only one frame drop then at the end 90% i get to many frame drop outs!!!! i tried with Maestro but the problem is that the Audio doesn't go with the movie (sync) only with the DTS track :(
that why i wanted to try Ifoedit.

Hi Gilaboy,
I'm focussing on LOTR (SEE). I have started again with Ifoedit, but now stripped everything out that I do not want to have. I made a new set (incl. new VIDEO and VTS set), after this I used Vobedit to get the streams. So I end up with the videostream, one audio stream (5.1) and one sub.
I'm resizing the video stream right now and then try again with IfoEdit 0.95. Will report the results as soon as possible.

Again Ifoedit gives errors, see attachment.
However it continues with creating the complete dvd file set. First part is ok, after a while the subs are gone and the speech is not in-sync with the movie (another problem????).
Maybe it has something to do with the VOB-id's because I left out the chapter information from the older IFO files (I still need to merge somehow both the celltimes files), so everthing is put into one big VOB instead of several as in the original. I'll try that tomorrow.

I am having the same "Too many frames dropped" problem when using the Author feature in combination with subtitles on some DVD titles.
In case the movie + audio files + subs are small enough to fit on one disk you can use the IFOEdit 'VOB extras' way to mux the files correctly. But remuxing with another M2V video file has not been very succesfull for me. (Audio synch problems).
Short before IfoEdit went dead a beta version 0.96b was released. It's a long shot, but has anyone tested this in that version yet? I'd love to test myself but I can't find the version anwhere.

I had same problem with Star Wars Episode II with 1 Audio and 2 subs.
Then I let DVD2DVD-R to do the job for me, and everything was ok!
(DVD2DVD-r also uses IFOEdit for authoring)

I recently got the same error also using IFO edit to author my DVD. I had 1 audio track, 1 subtitle, and the main movie. Anyone actually found a solution to this?
Thanks in advance.

Hi all first post.
Judging by the info all provides, I probably got little to add.
One thing though I did figure out, is this to many frames dropped thing.
Way back at xmas time I did my first DVD authoring with IfoEdit, and all went fine, no errors etc.
Then a few months later I repeated the process, and this time no matter what I did, ALWAYS got this error. Also tried to do it again on a friends PC where I also managed to get it to work at xmas, and got same error.
Now the only thing changed on both of them was the file system format, going from FAT32 to NTFS, both are running Windows 2000 SP3.
To clarify further, the partition where data was read from was FAT32, destination was NTFS.
So to test my theory, I converted a partition back to FAT32, and this time as at xmas all worked fine again, no "to many frames dropped" error.
So it seems NTFS to NTFS just dont work properly, at least not for me.
Also tried to have source data on a networked PC, this worked fine regardless of file system, both NTFS or FAT32 worked, but since host PC dont know what file system networked PC's have, (as far as I know)
guess that could explain why it worked.
So perhaps someone else could try and change the source partition to FAT32 and see if you still get the error, who knows might work for others too. Only downside is your movie file has to be under 4GB
