Is this news the real ???
Read here: http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/3554.cfm
Sincerly a was prefer to pay for only Derrow software and not for 321 Studios...but if Derrow join 321 Developement there is much good reason !! I hope :-)
Anyway Derrow forever :-)) !!!

if this is true...it wouldn't be too bad.
derrow has always had the drive and brains to pull this off.
one thing he lacked was money.
321 can now fund his program.
we may have to pay for it, but if they get it to a point where you insert a dvd, answer a few "wizard" questions and an ISO file is spit out, i would pay some good money for that.
whatever the "Big D" wants...i'm with him.

Derrow went to the USA a few days ago and let the beta testers know he wouldn't be back until November 26. Maybe this was the reason?

can one of the moderators please let us know if this is true or not?
And if so, how does this affect Derrow dvdsplit and dvdburn. will he stop supporting them and therefore forces us to go and buy dvdxcopy?

Hello everybody,
yes it is true, that I've joined 321Studios to help them with their problems.
But don't worry, this won't effect the rights on my tools. IfoEdit and VobEdit will stay freeware, and will be further developed by me.
I joined 321 Studios, because their doing some very good things to us all. Their going to make DVD-backuping legal. That's one big step into the right direction.
And I won't force nobody to buy DVDXCopy. But as soon as I have fixed their problems, and enhanced it with new features, I will suggest to get their new Kick-ass tool anyway.

i can say that i have dvdxcopy and for a simple process, all i have to do is hit 5 buttons total and i have perfect quality backups...on 2 discs of course...but hey when riteks are 0.83 each who can complain..thanks derrow...hopefully this will lead us to a new age here!

Given the current occupants of the white house and congress, I serious doubt if there will be any 'legalizing' of DVD backups. If fact, I predict there will be a move to a more a restrictive environment all in the name of intellectual property 'protection' (read corporate greed here). The corporate interests that 'own' the content and distribution channels have far to much influence for things to change in the near term.
RM
P.S. Derrow, all the best to you in your new endeavor. I am a very happy user of your tools and I'm certain you will bring that level of functionality and quality to your new situation.

It will take a while, until I have fixed all their problems.
They have really a mess up in the IFO creation/modification.
I've already removed a few bugs, so now it gets much more usable, but there's still a lot to do.
But when I've done all the fixes, it will be a kick-ass tool.
After fixing all problems, I'm also planing to implement new features into DVDXCopy.
If somebody has any special suggestions, lets hear them.

it would be great if there could be option in the DVDXCOPY to re-encode the main movie files with some encoder(not included in the software!) like CCE...etc! [advanced mode]?

copying to one disc would always be the best scenario if possible

Reggatta Mondatta,
It was the CLINTON administration that created the DMCA as a favor to the "entertainment" industry which heavily funded their campaigns. Then they selectively inforced laws as they wanted to.
Ashcroft said was he would enforce the laws as written. That's what the Justice Department has been doing with regards to IP (except for the Skylarov thing which really looks like somebody took off without doing enough homework then got themselves in a mess.)
Laws regarding use of consumer products always follow the products' arrival in the marketplace.
A few Hollywood-based lawyers are not going to stop the entire world from moving to digital media nor are they going to prevent individuals from making back-ups of licensed media.
Copyright is a limited legal construct granted to individuals by the society. So there's some shuffling and mis-steps as the market moves to digital from analog. Big deal, it's no different than any other technological change and nothing will stop it.
Interestingly enough, most of us drive automobiles regardless of the laws that were passed to protect the horse and buggy trade...

Derrow, Im mainly interested in backing up my own DVD to make them easier for me to use. DVDxcopy currently wants to put MORE crap in front of the movie. I dont need all the extras and certainly dont want to have to change disks. This really defeats the point of copying my movies.
Since you are now making money doing the programing Ill let the suggestions fly.
-A wizard type interface that lets you choose what you want to keep (warnings go bye bye, as do the previews and ads ect) and were to start the movie (ie start with the movie each time, not the menue)
-A wixard for editing the menu would be amazing (get rid of button, ect)
- remove all restriction (FF when I want, skip what I want, play on the player I want, ect)
Every effort needs to be made to help the user keep the Quality @ 100% and the video on 1 disk.

Basically, being able to reencode to fit on 1 disc, remove the FBI warnings, etc.
Thanks,

when selecting what you want to keep and what you don't want to keep, there must be a "preview" button.
this will play that title_set or menu, etc.
since there are so many ways to do a disc, it needs to present all the video assets to you - lets you preview them - and choose if to keep them.
this way you can see what you want to keep and what to throw away.

I'm afraid, no.
The beta stage is passed, and all other new fixes/enhancements are running on regular basis.
So just registered users will get them, and I can't do anything about it.

Yes, that is a good idea, and will be implemented as soon as we have a mpeg2 decoding license.

There will be an option to start the second disc with the movie directly. But we can't let you strip warnings away, because of copyright reasons. If a DVD is copyrighted and displays that in front of the movie, we have to keep that, to uphold the law.

This would be more like an editing software, instead of an backup-software. But this a good idea for a new product.

Maybe for the Movie itself, it is an good idea. But like I said above, we can't to that for the warnings.

This could be an option in a future version, but not that soon.
If so, an encoder needs to be implemented into the program, and for that licenses needs to be bought.

If this is not one of the best statements regarding the power of free software.....it lets the consumer decide what to do with it, not what does xyz corporation want me to do with it. I hope IFOEdit always remains freeware, not because it is free, but free of the corporate nonsense.

Derrow, are you sure you did not sign a no compete agreement?
You are from Europe and maybe not used to all the legal paper work
they make you sign in the USA.
I hope you did not sign anywere where the prohibit your from
taking any employment with a company that have a competing product.
Or that any ideas, inventions or programming rutine you
may come up while you are under their pay belongs to
them for all future?
I just want to make sure you did not sign with the
Derrow
18th November 2002, 22:25
Well no, my inventions/routines and programs will stay mine.
It means IfoEdit and VobEdit will be freeware in future too.
I don't give my Babys out of my hands :D :D
The rights will stay fully by me.
One problem is just the competing software DVDSplit and DVDBurn.
just_maurice
19th November 2002, 00:38
are you are saying that u have to stop making (supporting) dvdsplit and dvdburn when u mention "one problem". can u please be a little clearer on this. there are many people who do not trust 321 studios because of there history with their vcd product.

It kind of reminds me of the movie Bedazzeld,
.........did you read the small print?
http://www.stardesktop.com/movies/b/bedazzled/bedazzleda.jpg
Derrow do you not think that taking a 1 month salary from
321studio you taking bigger loss for the future?
If 321studio are never able to release a full retail version
of dvdxcopy you could corner the market.
In a few months I was thinking about buying the American
resale rights for your products.
But if DVDXCOPY will have a strong foothold, I may re-think.

This product DVDXCOPY is coming to market. I think there will be several companies selling similar software by this time next year.
Although I was part of the beta team, I still prefer ifoedit.
I'm a one dvd media man...lol. If I can't ifoedit then I re-encode with CCE.
Thanks for the great IFOEDIT program Derrow!
best wishes for your continued success, Jim :)

That was funny... who do you think invented paperwork. *lol* There was paperwork here long before you people started walking on two feet. ;);)
mpucoder
19th November 2002, 17:33
I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean, since all humans walked on two feet at the same time.
But the point is valid, we (U.S.A.) have many more employment stipulations than other countries, and Derrow may not be aware of two very important ones.
Virtually all companies that employed (not contracted) me required:
1) an agreement that I would not work for any company or on any project that directly competed with any product of my employer (not just those in my field) during my employment, and for a period of from 6 to 12 months after I left.
2) That any inventions and all copyrighted material authored by me was the intellectual property of my employer.
That last one is very important, it means nothing new can be added to any of Derrow's existing programs without 321Studios claiming it was created on their time, and therefor, theirs.

If the DVMAN's response is about Americans being people that
are behind on the evolution scale I do not get it.
Americans are 80% Europeans that come here 1-to-300years ago.
I came here 10years ago (from Sweden)
Americans are sue happy, and corporations make you sign to protect themself and they also make you sign so they can sue you if they feel they are loosing money becuse you are now with a "competing" company.
321studio maybe have some evil plans on how they
can shut down Derrow for good.

How about an option to use extracted (DVDdecrypter or Smartripper) files on a hard drive to create the backup discs from?
mck3nzi3
19th November 2002, 18:14
For deguthrie: you may always make img of yor file on hard disk and mount it with one of virtual dvd programs (like daemons tools). Then the software must see your file like a DVd inserted in dvd-reader.

Yes it is possible, and I already implemented that.
There's just one problem. The guys here think, it will confuse most beginning useres, so this option will be hidden, and not selectable.
It will be visible in a future version, a kind of platinum version.

I purchased the DVDSPLIT program and use it for all my DVDR-9 disks. Its a great tool! On an earlier threads u said that the DVDSPLIT might sub come to the competing factor of DVDXCOPY. I was just thinking that since u are in a position of strength (basically they need you)that u might be able to work out some deal with 321 studios. DVDSPLIT is a great program and thought I found the final answer to all my DVD splits. I'd hate to fork out another 99 bucks in the new future for another split program.

I second that. I purchased DVDsplit & DVDburn on the day Derrow left for the States. Unfortunately I'm having trouble getting it to work (probably user error on my part.) I'd really like to see a situation as you have suggested!
