Encoding Captured AVI to Mpeg using CCE or TMPGenc. ???

Can some body show me how or a link for a guide on converting my captured AVI into MPGE ?? I am planning to put on DVD-R. So is it better to use CCE or TMPGenc to get best quality.?? Please show in details.

P.S. Which is bigger in file size and better quality, mp2 and ac3 ??

encoding an avi in tmpgenc or cce is so easy, it doesnt really need a guide. but changing all the settings, you might need a hand. you should be able to use the guides here to get a grip on what the options do.

as for m2a v ac3, seeing as your in the USA, you better take this into account: R1 DVDs need to have AC3 or LPCM sound, other formats can be on there as well, other regions require AC3, M2A or LPCM sound, other formats can suppliment them.

auenf: So what u mean is that I can load my avi straight into CCE right. Because I see that CCE takes avi. So what do other people means when they have to "frameserve" using DVD2AVI,VFPAVI,Avisynth ect..Why don't they just import in their avi and encode it ?? Oh and one more thing, what are the good settings on CCE to get the best quality? I play around w/ it and read the guide here "Getting the best out of CCE" I tried encoded my avi by import it in CCE. I get a bunch of files...like mpv. What am i suppose to do with that ? I want mpeg. Well mainly m2v but i can demux the encoded mpeg to get m2v. Please help...

most people here reencode DVD's, which means instead of converting the movie off the DVD to a (huge) avi, they frameserve it to their encoder, which saves the a lot of hdd space, and maybe some time also (or it might take more time ;)). the main downfall of this is the CRC errors which some people get.

the 'robshot' guide is probably your best bet for setting up CCE properly, and robshot originally wrote if for avi source too ;). it goes by the name of 'getting the best out of CCE', but all you'll need is part 3, and import your avi in instead of the avs as the page says.

also, CCE defaults to outputting a .mpv file rather than a .m2v file, but it can be changed in the options, or just change it manually afterwards, if you selected mpeg-2 in CCE, its definately created a Mpeg-2 file.

Ok I am working with CCE right now, anh I have a question. Ok at the "Other Settings ->Mpeg-2 video settings" what am I suppose to pick there ? "The guide said to use Bitrateviewr and the first vob." But mine is not a dvd rip. Mine is a capture to avi and I want to convert to mpeg2 or m2v to be able to put on DVD-R. So what am I suppose to pick at that screen ??

When I did my avi capture this way, I selected 2000 for min, 9000 for max and then used the bitrate calculator in bitrate viewer where you enter the length of the movie and audio info and it calculates the average bitrate for you to fit onto a 4.7GB DVD.
I assume you have interlaced video 29.97FPS, in which case only check off DVD compliant, add sequence end code and linear quantization scale. If it is 23.97FPS then check off progressive and zigzag. The other settings I kept as in the guide.
I hope this helps as I know how baffling it can be when confronted with all the settings for the first time

Andykard: thanks for the tips. But i have a question. How come when i open bitrateviewer and load my avi nothing happens..it didn't load anything..everything was "gray" out not selectable..like the settings buttons and the save button...all the buttons on top.....what happen ??

P.S. I used TMPGenc. to encode my avi to mpg...(10+hours) god !! but then i have these lines at the bottom of the screen. Do you know why ?

Andy: one more thing...I use your settings and then followed the guide...when i press encode in cce, i got an error saying "cce encoding failed: File commit length 587836 is overflow" ??? why ????

I have never used bitrate viewer to open any avi. All you need is the calculator (the button marked bps calc above the open file button) and you can feed in the information to the calculator without opening your file. I use the file open button to load vobs from ripped DVDs so that you can see info on them (whether top or bottom field first, progressive, zigzag scan etc.). If you are using your own video (dv is BFF and analog video I think is TFF - you can always confirm this in TMPG by opening the avi in that and see the results of judging field order).

As for your CCE problem, I'm not a big expert on that, the message means nothing to me. You do not say which version you are using, I have used 2.5 and 2.64 and for avi video, I frameserved to CCE from Premiere 6.5 using the aviwrapper from videotools.com and had no problems with that. Are you using a demo version of CCE, if so maybe it only allows a small length of video to be encoded?

Andykard: hey thanks for the BitrateViewer.I will try it. But then I have some questions:

1. How come my encode avi to mpg using TMPGenc (can't use cce b/c of that error) comes out shaky ? The video looks really shaky ? Why ???

2. My mpg file is Interlaced on my TV ..?? why ? is the the way I encode right ? so what settings should I use so that my video is not look interlaced on my TV ?

OK you have to give us more information on what your starting material is. Is it a TV program you have recordrd or video footage from a DV camcorder?. How did you capture it?.
Television is interlaced so your final video should be interlaced, if it is shaky, this is usually due to having the wrong field set (bottom field first BFF (even fields) or top field first TFF (odd fields)
Read some of the fundamentals of video capture and encoding on this forum, it will help you understand what you are trying to do.
