View Full Version : Remote FWD AND REW not going to correct chapters(entrypoints)

I have noticed that with dvd2svcd, cce 2.50sp, iauthor that FWD (>| button) and REW (|<) on the dvd player they advance or go back one chapter, but only to that next chapter. Such as I watch chapter one, two three without touching remote, then while it is playing chapter 3, if i go press >| on remote, in theory it should go to chapter 4, but instead it will go to chapter 2, because it thinks it was still at chapter 1.
At th end of the disc, it should automatically display CHANGE DISC" image, but instead, if you let disc play out by itself, it instead goes to next chapter it thinks hould be played, i.e. chapter 2. You can press >| up to end and get the change disc image, but just seems like a glitch. Hell I would prefer the disc just stop at the end instead of looping back to beginning.
Thanks and good luck to all.

9/10 times this is a DVD player issue and has nothing to do with DVD2SVCD. Chapters are simply software points and many DVD player read them incorrectly or act wierd at times.
My Pioneer player does wierd things with chapters too from time to time. For instance if I am at the beginning of a chapter I can move between chapters fine, but if I am just a few seconds into a chapter it will bounce to the previous chapter no matter what I push.

In who's theory? Audio-CD player owners? You are basically transfering experience from one system to another and expect it to be valid there. I assumed it too. But when I took a look at the PBC scripts, I started to realise, that things are a bit different. When you start in PBC, I think this is what happens:
The Player loads a program which tells him how to respond to the input of skip and numbers. Take a look at a script after running dvd2svcd. If you have even modest programming knowledge, you see that pbc doesn't work as straight as you would expect it.
As markrb said, it is usually a player issue.

But in this case it is not a Player issue. The "problem" is how the SVCD chapters is done within the SVCD specification. Take a look here:
http://www.vcdimager.org/guides/chapters.html The below is an excerpt from that link:

In what way are VCD chapters not like the perfect idealised (DVD-like/figure 4) chapters?
Consider the playback of (a) (remembering that (a) is either a <playlist> or <selection> with the <play-item> or "entry1").
Now, if "next" is pressed BEFORE reaching the time point of "entry2" then all is well. However, what happens if "next" is pressed while the playback is between "entry2" and "entry3"? It will go to <next> and that links to (b)! That is, in terms of function, we pressed "next" and went to a point in the video we have already watched!
Indeed, pressing "next" any time while in (a) will go to (b) and thus beginning playback at "entry2".
Unfortunately, this particular aspect of VCD chaptering is its limitation. There is no real way to get around this. One just has to accept that the next and prev buttons on the remote are not quite context specific...
However, we can augment the underlying chaptering system by creating "scene select" menus to help cover to some degree this particular limitation.

thanks guys for the replies, i figured that much. It sure would be great if somebody (who knows more than me about PBC, UX-3) could come up with a new PBC that would be compliant that would allow correct playback control.
Also, has anyone ever bought any vcd movies because I am guessing that those people have the same PBC issues...
Thanks again guys and thanks to DVD2SVCD for a great program.

Well, that text sums up what I figured from the script tha DVD2SVCD creates. If PBC enters playback at any particular point, the actions of all Controll buttons are set, no matter how far pb advances before eof.
You can get around this, by using numeric buttons. Unfortunately, this aspect of PBC doesn't work on all Players, which I was trying to say, but in retrospect, did not say. I was taking reference to Marks problem description, but didn't say so. I have an ESS Player, which is a very humble servant, when it comes to PBC. My other cheap player is a cyberhome 402, which refuses to skip to the right chapter if entered as a number, UNLESS I activate PBC and press the number quickly. That is a player issue.
As to lonewolf... There is an easy and thorough solution to this imperfection...go DVD...
