Hi all, I need a little guidance. I am preparing to purchase a computer for the express purpose of backing up DVD’s and home DV. I know asking what kind of equipment is somewhat subjective but I do need a little help. I cannot afford a dual processor so lets leave that alone. Is there a set of general recommendations that would apply? Keeping in mind encoding and burning DVD is the only function.

Thanks,
DL

If you could wait until March you could get Serial ATA/2 for HD transfer rates up to 300MB/sec. It's supposed to be final by then. Prices also drop pretty well after January. A nice AMD Athlon setup with a 1GB of Corsair RAM and those SATA/2 HD's should do nicely. I like ABIT motherboards since you can control almost every facet and they have loads of perfomance minded features. You can get a damn fast system without breaking your wallet on Intel.

Thanks, for the feedback. I currently have a 1.6 Intel, which I switched to because I had trouble with my T-Bird AMD and CCE. I know it has been resolved now. Is the general consensus that AMD makes a better system for encoding assuming drives and memory and all else is equal?
