CCE Image Quality Shocking!

Hey all .. Just did a few of my DVD's to SVCD to see how it would look. Using CCE 2.62 with DVD2SVCD i found that there is very bad image colour pallet issues. In TMPGenc the subtle colour changes were smooth but thru CCE there was "banding" of the colours changes. Not sure what i'm doing wrong as i haven't "fiddled" with any of the settings in regards to CCE. I have a couple of screenshots i took of the output for comparison if anyone wants them i will upload for you. Sorry of there's info that i've left out!!

Win2K Pro SP3
Dual PIII1Ghz (not oc'd)
768MB SDRAM
CCE-SP 2.62
TMPGenc Plus v2.58.44.152
Encoding PAL SVCD no subtitles.

Any hints as to how to fix the quality issue appreciated. CCE is much faster than TMPGenc and is supposed to be better quality. I"m happy using TMPGenc, but if i can get quality that is just as good out of CCE with better speed i would be stoked.

I have added the files for comparison to some webspace.

and compare the "CCE" images to the "TMPGenc" images. In the CCE 01 image you can see quite noticable banding on the sky. In the second image CCE 02 the colours of the rocks in the river look very green and un-natural. The movie featured is an extra from ICE AGE. Any Suggestion, flaming or theories appreciated!

I once had an issue not dissimilar to this, I think it was with 2.62, only used it once though.

Anyway, the best thing to do would be to downgrade to 2.5. Image quality is as good as 2.62, and it should be faster because of avisynth support. Do you not want to use 2.5 for some reason?

I am using 2.62 as it was what was available to me. I have no problem using 2.50 but i do not have it.

Would the "matrix" setting have anything to do with it ?? I've tried setting it to both 2.62 CGI and ticking the "Use current encoder standrad matrix" ... both have the same effect. I'll see if i can locate the trial of 2.50.

No it wouldn't be the matrices, you used the standard one after all.

Thanks, they have taken the demo of any kind off their site and was finding it hard to locate .. encoding now a *LOT* quicker than TMPGenc, but it doesn't seem to be using 100% CPU ... might be an SMP option or 2 that i need to fiddle with. I'll look into it.

Avisynth doesn't support dual processors. To get full dual processor support you'll either need to feed an avi in directly to CCE or run 2 simultaneous encoding jobs via avisynth.

ahh ... mkay .. its strange tho 'coz its using about 60-70% CPU ... so i assume that some is CCE and some is avisynth?

also try changing the 'luminance level' in CCE

With the downgraded version of CCE it is going much better and producing results that i'm happy with. Just wish that it would use both of my CPUs fully .. oh well i guess we can't have everything.

CCE version 2.50 is an excellent build, and it's great that everything is working ok for you now. Just for your future reference, however, you will find that if you go to the Japanese part of Cinemacraft's website, they have the newest builds of the CCE-SP demos for download. I don't know why they offer these only on the Japanese page, but I'm glad they offer them at all, and the Japanese downloads are English version files anyway!
