help it takes so long!

hi i hope somebody can point me in the right direction
i am trying to encode a dvd which after ripping is 5.1g
this is the first time i have tried this
i would normally split in 2 and burn. My prob is
after going through ifo edit and dvd2avi i start
tmpg and use the dvd wizard i chose a vbr of 4000
it then tells me i do not have room on dvd-r to fit
so i adjust the br on the slider to fit so far so good!
then i go to the expert tab (thats a laugh im no expert!)
any way i change a few settings ie VBR 2 PASS,DC component 10 bits,
and also the sloest setting in the MOTION SEARCH BOX
i want the best quality i can get!(dont we all)
now when i start to encode it tells me it will take 18 hours S**T!!
ok when it is done it turns out the file is to BIG!! by about 500mb
what have i done wrong? does tmpeg take into acount the audio?
i did VIDEO+AUDIO when i take the file into sonic pe everything
works fine it is just to big for dvd-r also i have no chapters just
1 title is that normal? the quality looks fine on pc the test will
be on the big screen TV! but now i have to go back and do it again! to get the file down in size?
my machine is not slow why so long to encode?
can anybody give me a few tips here

There's hardly any difference quality-wise between the slowest and slow setting for motion search precision. The encoding will go a lot faster if you set it to slow (high quality) instead of slowest (highest quality). You won't see any difference, I'm sure.
