A disc that can't be extracted

I haven't earlier run to a problem like this so I'm somewhat clueless.

I have an original digitaly remastered region 2 HK movie that I can't get extracted to my hdd with dvd-decrypter or smartriper.
Ripping fails always at the same point:

I can't see any kind of visual damage on the disc and it also plays on a standalone player. When using dvd-decrypter reading goes allways to 0 at the same position and causes dvd-decrypter to lock up and freezes my XP. I have tried different settings and even SR but everything fails. I'm going to try playing the movie with my reader
and extracting again some other movie but I can't belive that my reader just suddenly breaks down and can't read some sector.

So is my next step to go shopping for a better dvd reader or how can I find out what's causing the problem?

Well the disc plays normaly with my dvd reader so why does my extraction fail?
I also read two other discs to check out that my reader is 100% working and no probs there.

Is it possible for you to exchange the disc ?

Most stores will give you the benefit of doubt swap a DVD if you tell them it plays up in your settop box.

You should then at least prove if it's the disc or not.

Even commercially produced disc play up from time to time.

Try vStrip.

Its a disc error and your drive doesnt appear to return from reading it, hence its getting stuck. No program 'should' be able to read it if dvd decrypter cant, seeing as how it works at the lowest level already, totaly bypassing the OS.

I'll borrow an trusty old Toshiba 1212 and try reading again. I just
got quite frustrated when I always got lockups when trying something new and the disc looked ok.

If I remember right i couldn't see any visual marks on the disc. I'll just go everything over and tripel check everything with a different reader. I'm gona also just let the disc play normally from the beginning to the end , last time I just rewinded forwards and backwards trying to find the place where it locked but without success.
