Ok now i bet there is a realy simple answer for this but why is it only 2 pass that can be done with divx?In CCE you can do up to 9 passes for mpeg 2!!! :eek: As i was typing this i think i figured it out , but i will let you guys answer first cuz its late and im talking giberish , rocking & drooling agian ;)

What Are FairUse's Main Features?

All-In-One solution - Converts straight from DVD, the only other software
you need is a working ASPI layer (but see yet to be implemented features
below).

Fully integrated MM4 support - Video is encoded at up to 30 different
bitrates/codec types simultaneously, for later "cross cutting" into the
final output file.

Best quality for a fixed size - You specify the size (disk space) of the
output file, and the best quality file that will fit that space is produced.

Maximally flat quality level - The new (in version 0.30 beta) encoding mode:
"diff tracking" adjusts the DivX quantisation levels on a frame by frame

Variable keyframe interval - You can configure the minimum and maximum

Audio demuxing - AC3 audio tracks can be demuxed and are synchronized to

All that info is great to know about fairuse but it doesn't answer the basic question (unless it was buried and I missed it). Does it support more than two passes?

If you had followed the link and read up on Fairuse you would see it supports more than two pass.
Here is the info from the guide...

You can define how many encodings to make. I've had some good results by just leaving it at the default of 4 and pressing Auto Add. Recently I have been working during the day, so time is not an issue and I let it do 5 encodings. Some people like to autoadd 10 encodings, but I think that if you are going to spend that much CPU time on encoding, you might as well do so with a little foresight. But for general use under fair compression settings, 4 or 5 auto-added encodings should be just fine. Adding additional encodings is likely to only increase the quality of the final AVI slightly, but some people (myself included) would like to see just how good a FairUse DivX can get

I did go to the webpage but missed the faq. Anyway it looks like it is restricted to work only with a modified version of divx 3.11 by combining different encodings created with the fast motion and low motion codec. I seem to remember another program a while back called makefilm that did the same thing (though I think it was using only 1 low motion encoding and 1 fast motion encoding).

One of the things that seems to be a drawback is that there really is no clear cut guide to picking the resolution to use. Even the manual seems to suggest that this is a "try it and see what the results are" type approach. Meaning that if you don't get the results you want then you need to perform the 15 to 24 hour process all over again.

I've compared divx3 and divx5 encodings and am interested to see how this program compares. I'm open to different ways of encoding. Let you know.

I have used Fairuse, Nandub, DivX5.02 Pro and XviD and find they all work good and can be used to make great 1 or 2 cd DVDrips.

I think Fairuse was replaced by Nandub and XviD will replace Nandub.

FairUse does not encode multiple passes, FairUse encodes in one pass, multiple files, concurrently, to splice together one final file. This is the antiquated approach called MM4 that was released before exact control over the DivX 3.11 codec was implemented by nando.

Currently, there are no mpeg4 encoders that will encode more than 2 passes. The explanation lies in SearchPrecision of the codec. If you notice, XviD has 6 search precisions, these all change how much math is actually done per macroblock during the encoding process. Now, looking at the example of CCE, you'll find there is no search precision setting. That is because CCE uses a lower search precision, with multiple passes that increase the precision. It could be compared to calculating the square root of 21.

First Pass: 4.5
Second Pass: 4.58
Third Pass: 4.582
Fourth Pass: 4.5825

High Search Precision, Two Passes: 4.5825

Nandub and XviD only use two passes for easy filesize prediction. (Nandub had absolutely no ability to set search precision) CCE uses multiple passes for both higher precision and filesize prediction and TMPGEnc also uses two passes for easy filesize prediction.

Ahhhh. I was under the impression (from reading the faq) that it was doing multiple encodings then overlaying those encodings to produce the best possible result. I have heard of doing this to reduce noise on captures, and thought it was doing the same thing. I think I'll stick with gnot nandub.

Thanks for correcting me on that.
I know Fairuse works great and using its multiple encodes works very well but its slow and takes alot time.

I have seen movies made with Fairuse, Nandub and XviD and DivX5.02 Pro and they all looked good. I think its to the point now that if you know what your doing you can use either one and make a nice encode. I think XviD will replace Nandub and Fairuse :D

Divx 3.x can not reach the standard of divx5 or xvid , divx 3.x is very buggy , and i can tell straight away if it was encoded in divx 3.x because of the small macroblocks , i looked at a few old divx's i made way way back with divx 3.x and there realy bad! ...maybe that was my encoding :D but overall its at the bottom of the list of codecs :D

Most people still feel Nandub is king when it comes to quality.
I have movies made by Fairuse and Nandub and you dont see any macroblocks ;) IMHO XviD and DivX5.02 Pro have had to work hard to even compare with a Nandub encode. Like I said earlier thou there all to point where if you know what your doing you can make high quality encodes.
The only reason to stop using Fairuse and Nandub is because they use DivX3.11a and its not Mpeg4 ISO compliant :(

With DivX 3.11, you cannot control search precision, you get what you get, two passes only gives us filesize prediction.

With DivX 5, you change search precision with the setting marked 'Performance/Quality' under the Advanced tab. And two passes is only used for filesize prediction.

With XviD, same thing, except its marked as Motion Search Precision.

So there's no reason to do more than 2 passes in XviD/DivX 5 because we already have control over our precision and filesize, in DivX 3.11 we lack the necessary resources to influence the precision one way or another (because of the limited interface we control the codec through and its closed source nature).

So after all that talk that more than two passes weren't necessary with Divx... what does this mean now? Does Divx's multipass feature differ from whats in CCE?
