How to backup individual episodes by ripping with smart ripper

How do I go about ripping a dvd (for *.avi backup to cd-r with Gordion Knot) with smartripper if the DVD has individual episodes. In particular, the collection has three episodes per DVD. If you need to know the collection (in case you have done it yourself), it is the Sopranos DVD collection.

Can someone explain why the author says to add vob 6, 7 and 8. Why not the other vob's?

I just went through something like this with the Berserk anime.

This is what I came up with from trial and error.

1)Watch the DVD and figure out which chapters correspond to the beginning of each episode.

2) Go into Smart Ripper and proceed normally but in the chapter selection window only select the chapters which correspond to the episode you want to rip. Do this for each episode.

for example: in Berserk Chapters 1-6 were episode 1 but chapter 6 was a preview for the next episode. Since I wanted to save space I only ripped 1-5 for episode 1, then 7-11 for episode 2, etc.

3) You can use DVD2AVI across each episode normally and get the audio file normally and also encode them normally from here.

I encountered 2 drawbacks to this method in subtitles and chapters. If you want to extract subtitles you'll need to figure out the proper offset to display them by because the subtitles will retain their original time codes. Chapter information is ripped as if you were ripping the whole cd so you'll need to re-write your chapter file subtracting the times for each chapter as necessary for your episodes.

It worked for me and I learned a lot doing it. Guessing at the subtitle timings was the worst part but you probably won't encounter that problem.

P.S. I originally did this with DVDDecrypter but also re-did it with SmartRipper in the vain hope that it would somehow magically correct the subtitle and chapter timings.
