Gay. I have to re-type this crap since I deleted my org post by accident, and my second *typing* didn’t seem to post. Oh well. So I think I solved my problem and hopefully this can help out other people too.
ISSUE:
I was using Pioneer 2x media, Verbatim 2x media, Mitsui 2x media and even though 2x was selectable in all my burning programs, it would only burn at 1x even though everything said it was burning at 2x.
SETUP:
A7M266-D
A04 v1.33 Normal (Non-hacked)
WinXP Pro (No SP1)
Primary IDE Channel: Master: A04 Slave: Nothing
Second IDE Channel: Master: HD Slave: HD
Via 4in1 v4.38
PIO
ANALYSIS:
DMA would not work for me with that setup. Nothing would write even 1bit to the DVD at any speed. I reverted to PIO and 1x was now functional and 2x was selectable. Also, my system was now slow as hell during the burning process which pissed me off considerably due to PIO. Whenever I tried writing with the above media at 2x, which was selected during the burn, it would only record at 1x. I would also notice that the buffer could not keep up it seemed and would constantly drop to 0 then approach 100, 0 100, 0 100, etc, during the burn, again, which was really at 1x.
The solution isn’t a different firmware. It is if you want to get your Ritek media working at 2x, but this issue is solely for people that have yet to burn *anything* at 2x. What I found was by switching around the IDE positions for the HDs and DVD-R:
Primary IDE Channel: Master: HD Slave: HD
Second IDE Channel: Master: A04 Slave: Nothing
I could successfully enable DMA and burn at 2x! Go figure. However, I still receive errors in *some* programs:
NERO (The version released Nov1st) – I cannot write at 2x. I receive a communication error within three seconds of pressing “burn”.
DiscJuggler – Works perfect. I am currently at 98% into a 2x burn of 4.3gb and the time elapsed is 27mins.
RecordNow – Works perfect. No errors and 2x is a+
InstaDVD – Fails at 2x at the initilization of the disc. Nothing burnt.
DVD Decryptor - Does not write anything at 2x. Fails.
Well, I hope this helps some of you that are having this type of error. And if you have not drawn the conclusion yet, I believe the inability to write at 2x and PIO being enabled are directly related when dealing with XP.
