Burn 750Mb+ Files to 700Mb CDs

Hi,

I have downloaded some DivX films from the internet but they have been ripped to over 720Mb so I can't burn them onto a 700Mb CD.

I read a artical somewhere about burning oversized files onto a CD by changing the mode of the CD. The web site said that this meant that you could put an file over 750mb onto a 700mb CD. It said that this was done by reducing the error trapping which shouldn't cause problems with DivX films.

I can't remember the address of the site, and as I recall there were no details on how to perform the operation on the page anyway. I have tried to do this using Nero, but I still can't burn these oversized films onto CD.

My questions are :

- is this really possible, and if so how is it done? Can you do it with Nero?
- does it cause other problems like not being able to be read in certain drives or problems playing back the films

This thread started it all. But long time has passed since then. There is a tool ready to make such CDs: Mode2 CD Maker (URL: http://webs.ono.com/de_xt/index.html) and a filter to read such CDs, found on the same page. About your questions:

- Yes it can be burned with nero but the image must be creatd with the above tool
- Yes it can lead to troubles reading with some modern DVD drives such as Samsung ones. There is a compatibility list distributed with the tool.

I'd suggest you to take a look at Doom9's XCD guide (http://www.doom9.org/xcd.htm), too.

BTW a new, much improved release is coming.

No news about the XCD filter, sorry. I sent him an email some days ago but still got no response. So I think he is busy with other stuff. However I'll try to help him on the development of the filter once I finish the next release of my tool.

you are also welcome to step by on #mcf from time to time, one of our dev members ( Jan 'myFUN' Schlenker ) was digging his way through the Dshow dungeon and created the first ( very early alpha ) working MCF Dshow parser, and of course we still plan to include the XCD specs as mode 2 form 2 extension to MCF, so our parser has to be able to read XCDs correctly .... maybe Jan can help with XCD filter improvement ?
