I have read through a few similar threads this morning but none really fits the issue I have to raise here.
Situation is thus:
I have found that TMPGEnc produces the best encoding of "motion" when compared with REMPEG2.
However, my suspicions became aroused when viewing the output produced by TMPGEnc that there was a slight picture degredation, i.e. blurring of the final output, when compared with the original video stream.
At first I dismissed it as the result of poor quality TV or DVD player. However, I could not get this out of my head so I made a test, "in the lab" so to speak.
Using Power DVD and the best bit of footage for clarity that I could find on the film, I captured one still from the original source and one still from the output produced by TMPGEnc. I then opened both bitmaps in Paint Shop Pro.
To my surprise, the original was definitely more crisp and in-focus than the TMPEnc output. Small dots in the picture were almost blurred out of existance on the TMPEnc encoded bitmap. I could not understand why this could be.
I then noticed that the bit map from the TMPGEnc output had black bars to either side, wheras the original from the film was slightly wider and had no bars.
So it seems to me that TMPGEnc has got the aspect ratio wrong, even though I set the video size at 720X572 (PAL) and aspect ratio of both source and output as 16:9.
Can someone help me with this. Is it possible that the source is not actually 720X576? but 720X something smaller. If so, then that could explain why the quality is reduced in the output, as the aspect ratio would be changed slightly. How can I find this out?
