Problem with Remuxed m2v or IFO?

Hi, I have just done my first DVD but I have run into one problem. When I play the DVD in my standalone player (Panasonic DVD-RV32) everything works perfectly except for the actual movie.

It looks good except for 1 part of the image throughout the whole movie there is about a 1 inch thick vertical distortion going from top to bottom on the TV in the middle of the right half of the screen (21in TV), the actual distortion is like the movie is in a lower resolution and looks slightly pixellated. When I re-encoded the movie with TMPGEnc Plus 2.56 I used the 'DVD(PAL)' Template but made the following changes:

Under Video TAB:

- Resolution to '352x576' which is within the DVD PAL standard.
(Yes the movie is PAL)

- Aspect Ratio to '16:9 Display'

- VBV Buffer Size to '0 (automatic)'

Anything else I changed like 'DC Component' and 'Motion Search' Precision is unlocked in the Template anyway.

I have played a sample movie downloaded from VCDhelp that has VCD and SCVD video authored as a DVD and that plays fine. I have also Demuxed the first VOB file from the movie (that had the distortion) and authored the m2v and AC3 file using IfoEdit's 'DVD Author' Feature and it has the same problem on my player. Then I Demuxed the first VOB from the movie (the original this time) and authored those 2 and had absolutely no problem running on my player.

Also the movie that has the distortion plays perfectly on the computer.

I also looked everywhere through all the *.IFO's in IfoEdit and changed all the resolutions to '352x576' where it related to the movies' Titleset to see if there was some sought of conflict going on, but no difference. Even then when I load my DVD into SmartRipper it says the resolution is '720x576'(although I'm not sure if SmartRipper does this through Default anyway).

I would like to keep the resolution at '352x576' because the movie is about 4 hours long and I would like to minimise a chance of macroblocks appearing at the higher resolution when I have to drastically lower the bitrate to about 2500-2600 and also keep it on 1 DVD. The movie still looks great at that resolution and bitrate.

What I want to know is, is it the resolution that's causing the problem and only the resolution? Or is there something somewhere in the IFO files I have to change to let my DVD Player know of the resolution change? I can't see why I can't use this resolution because IT IS part of the DVD Standard.

I have no specific knowledge of image problem you have but I have had no luck re-muxing a tmpgenc video stream with ifoedit, the picture is normally great but has a pulsing brightness in the background. I have had more luck however with rempeg transcoded streams & ifoedit 0.6. Spruceup seems to like tmpgenc m2v files & can be remuxed with the original ac3 audio.

BTW rempeg will do 352x576

Thanks for replying. I was going to see if rempeg helps with compatability or not but was worried about it reputation with quality. Your light and dark problem sounds like macrovision protection.

I figured out what option was causing the problem.

It was the Aspect Ratio under the Video Tab. I changed it from '16:9 Display' to '4:3 Display' and the distortion went away.

But there has to be another way of getting rid of this without resorting to changing the Aspect Ratio to 4:3. I mean how do all the big companies create DVDs in anamorphic widescreen, because it is part of the standard so I should be able to leave it at 16:9. My DVD Player (Panasonic DVD-RV32) displays all my DVDs that are in anamorphic 16:9 correctly on my 4:3 TV and one day soon I wish to be able to purchase a widescreen tv so I'd like to have all the DVDs I create at 16:9.

Could it have something to do with the fact that it's a PAL DVD?
Please help....
