My Toshiba has some issues with some of the movies I read, yet I can read them on my computer perfectly, and my friends' players can also read them fine. I have an HDTV and progressive scan is a must. My question is, which is the most compatible with DVD-R and not real expensive, like in the $150 range. I was looking at the Apex 800 model, but it doesn't mention anything about DVD-R media. I want to make sure I get one that works with everything I throw at it, and I know there are a bunch that can do this. There is a bran on ebay called Akai that claims it can read everything including jpeg and mp3 CD's, but I've never heard of it before. It's cheap, has all the features I want, but are they any good? Thanks:confused:

I can atest to the fact the Apex 800 plays DVD-R and -RW. I have one connected to my 53" Pioneer WideScreen HD TV. The only trouble I've ever had with it is an occasional "Minor Disc Error" (not only DVD-R's but a few commercial DVDs). Same disc plays perfectly on my Apex 3201, Samsung DV1000, Sony 300 and Panasonic L50. But it happens so infrequently that I don't consider it a problem. Quality of image and remote controls are good. For the price, it's pretty good dvd player.

I've always taken my DVD-R to the Good Guys store to
verify the compatibality on standalones.
I tested many different brands on 10-15 DVD players.
I've had 100% compatibility with Princos DVD-r on
Sony (all current models), JVC, Phillips, Yamaha, Denon, Panasonic,
May of those DVD players have been progressive scan.
I haven't tested my DVDs on a Pioneer yet.
My choice would be the Progressive scan DVD player by Sony
The Sony played all my DVDs. Good price on the Sony too from
'One Call'. They are on the web. Should be able to get a progressive scan Sony delivered for well under $200
The most picky DVD player I ran across is the
Toshiba SD-4800, DVD will not play....Nor will it play on Mitsubishi
(but it plays does play on the lower end Toshiba SD-2800)
Apex seems to eat eveything too.
I'm presently burning on Princo's (lite purple w/ white top)
I prefer them over the Ritek and Accu Disc.
