View Full Version : Possible to use Fraunhofer mp3 codec instead of LAME?

Guess what, I've recently returned to my seemingly impossible task (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=30752http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=30752) to make perfect Buffy SVCD rips (2 audio and subtitles) and I was wondering whether I could use the Fraunhofer mp3 codec (either the Radium hack or Fastencc command line tool) in SVCD to receive better sound quality on 112 kbit.

LAME of course rocks on aps-settings but on lower bitrates that I'm forced to use due to having two audio streams on my SVCDs Fraunhofer on high quality setting comes with better results. This is not too obvious on regular speech but when you've got some background music like alternative bands playing in the Bronze you can hear some artifacts with LAME.

So is this possible and why not ;)

You can convert your extracted_audio... by hand while dvd2svcd is doing the video conversion. Just replace your encoded_audio... with the file you made yourself before dvd2svcd goes to 'muxing and cutting', and you will get your audio mixed in. Just select also 112 kb in DVD2SVCD, so the video will be at the right size.
If you want, you can check 'edit avisynth cript file' in frameserver tab, so DVD2SVCD will pause before video encoding, if your done with your audio just hit ok and it will continue.

Nope, you can't use MP3 in SVCDs. Only MP2.

Sory, my fault. I just read anything about an other encoder and replied, typed faster than thinking. ;)
The way I described you can use another encoder than toolame, but of course the resulting sound-file has to be MPEG1-Layer2 (mp2) and no other format.

Yeah, I've mixed this up myself. I mean, maybe my standalone could playback these kinda 'XSVCD' but I want to be standard-compliant. Of course, there aren't too many standalone that do play subtitles from SVCDs as I've just found out when I was looking for a DVD to buy for my little cousin. It depends on the chipset and it's gotta be either ESS or Winbond...
