View Full Version : Databank report for IfoEdit 0.95 prereleases

fellow beta-testers:
i suggest a thread that accumulates all the positive and negative reports of all IfoEdit 0.95 prereleases -- and ONLY 0.95 prereleases! it should be more like a databank for derrow to minimize his time to search for any feedbacks of his program -- not to say that this is a good advertisement for A LOT of readers to become beta-testers as well and support derrow ;). in addition, ppl can closely monitor the development of IfoEdit.
also, no NEW suggestions should be made here b/c derrow already mentioned that with so many new features added, he now needs to catch up with the bugs -- and i agree that a stable program is certainly more desirable than an unstable one with featuritis (reminds me of micro$soft -- that was no punch to you, derrow :D).
i suggest the following format:
1. ifoedit beta version:
(eg. pre1, pre2, etc.)
2. subject/topic:
(eg. dvd-authoring, creating ifos, dvd-player, vob extras, etc.)
3. short description/report of problem or success:
(eg. "chapter import works sometimes," "A/V out of sync," "freezing problem," etc.)
4. name of dvd (incl. region code):
(eg. Gladiator - R1)
5. step by step description of procedure:
(eg. 1. ripped with decrypter, 2. reencoded with reempeg, 3. used ifoedit pre2 to strip xyz, etc.)
everything should be kept as short as necessary, but as precise as possible. maybe derrow can see a pattern in the reports that points out to a solution, and perhaps somebody else already found a workaround and could post it here as well. right now, beta reports are posted everywhere in no-man's-land which is obviously kind of chaotic, especially if you want to do a follow-up of that thread. bookmarking all those threads is tedious... :(
ppl, as i said, this thread is intended to support derrow. so let me know what you think about the idea, and maybe this could get a STICKY!
i will post my first report when i get a little bit more acquainted with pre2 (ie. "burn, baby, burn"). :D

IFOEdit 0.95 Prerelease 3 is out!!! (For beta....)
Derrow
2nd November 2002, 13:35
It looks like the crashing with subpictures isn't still fixed yet in Prerelease 3.
It is a buffer-size problem, when muxing subpictures.
I just made some changes again, and will see if it workes now without crashing.

It looks now, like I've fixed it.
Prerelease 3.1 is now available, and I've got 2 positive responses, that it workes now perfect.

here my first report
1. IfoEdit beta version:
pre 3.1
2. Subject/topic:
dvd-authoring
3. Short description/report of problem or success:
a) :p no more runtime error when using subtitles.
b) :( not all audio-streams are muxed into new vob.
c) :( fast-forward and chapter access failed in dvd-player.
d) :( IfoEdit closes down after multiplexing the new vobs without creating ANY ifos -> a separate "Create IFOs" is necessary
4. Name of dvd (incl. region code):
A.I. artificial intelligence (R1)
5. Step by step description of procedure:
1. ripped using dvd-decrypter
2. reempeg'ed to yield "ai.m2v" file (~ 3.08 gb)
3. extracted 4 audio streams, 3 subtitle streams, and chapters (together ~ 1.35 gb) which have been added in exactly the following sequence and would result in >4.3 gb - but i'm just testing ;):
- 0x80 6ch-ac3 (english)
- 0x81 2ch-ac3 (english)
- 0x83 6ch-ac3 (french)
- 0x8a 6ch-dts (english)
- 0x20 englisch
- 0x21 spanish
- 0x22 french
- cell time import for chapters
=> the result is a 2.97 gb movie with only 2 6ch-audio streams (according to vts_01_0.ifo), but only the first audio-stream actually has sound (6ch-ac3 english)
=> after multiplexing all vobs, IfoEdit closes down and fails to create ANY ifos -> a separate "Create IFOs" procedure is necessary, but the generated content is bizarre: the actual movie length is only about 1h22m, but IfoEdit's last chapter entry is 13h32min!!! version 0.94 "only" made something around 3h... so that's a new record ;)
=> fast-forwarding on my dvd-player (sony dvp-ns715p) freezes the movie; jumping to the next chapter has the same effect, no problem when playing it in my dvd-drive with powerdvd; but i know that my sony is quite picky regarding "clean" ifos (so that's a nice challenge)...
=> interestingly, the time display on my dvd-player jumps between the elapsed time and the time of the next chapter (~ 0.5 sec rhythm), starting somewhere at the initial 1/5 or 1/6 of the movie.
some more reports soon ;).

1. IfoEdit beta version:
pre 3.1
2. Subject/topic:
"Show Reserved Value," "Menu Extras," "VOB Extras"
3. Short description/report of problem or success:
When "Show Reserved Value" is checked, clicking on the "Menu Extras" or "VOB Extras" buttons crashes IfoEdit with an error message: "IfoEdit.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. [...]"
4. Name of dvd (incl. region code):
not movie-dependent
5. Step by step description of procedure:
1. open ANY IFO-file.
2. check the "Show Reserved Value" box.
3. click on the "Menu Extras" or "VOB Extras" button and IfoEdit crashes with the above mentioned error message.

1. ifoedit beta version:
ifoedit .95pre3.1
2. subject/topic:
dvd-authoring
3. short description/report of problem or success:
whenever i try to bring in the subtitles it will build the vobs till about 5% and then crash everytime. If i build it without the subs, then it finishes fine.
4. name of dvd (incl. region code):
Fight club-don't know region code (u.s.)
5. step by step description of procedure:
(eg. 1. ripped with decrypter, 2. reencoded with cce, 3. used dvd2avi to get 5.1 channel sound, ifoedit.95pre3.1 to get chapter times and subtitles)
also the audio seems to be out of sync, i thought this was becuase of the studio logo at the beginning, i removed that and re-ripped the audio but it is still out of sync... i doubt this is from this release and is probably just a result of my own stupidity...if anyone has any suggestions on how to get the audio to work, they would be very appreciated.
thanks

1. IfoEdit beta version:
pre 3.1
2. Subject/topic:
dvd-authoring
3. Short description/report of problem or success:
IfoEdit shuts down without warning during multiplexing
4. Name of dvd (incl. region code):
Die Hard With A Vengeance (R1)
5. Step by step description of procedure:
1. ripped using dvd-decrypter
2. reempeg'ed and got "die3.m2v" file (~ 3.02 gb)
3. extracted 3 audio streams, 3 subtitle streams, and chapters (together ~ 770 mb) which have been added in exactly the following sequence:
- 0x80 2ch-ac3 (english)
- 0x81 6ch-ac3 (english)
- 0x83 2ch-ac3 (french)
- 0x20 englisch
- 0x21 spanish
- 0x22 french
- cell time import for chapters
=> after producing around 300 mb of the new VTS_01_1.VOB, ifoedit simply disappears from the screen .

1. IfoEdit beta version:
pre 3.1
2. Subject/topic:
chapter numbering with "Save Celltimes to file"
3. Short description/report of problem or success:
i get more chapters than in the original
4. Name of dvd (incl. region code):
Die Hard With A Vengeance (R1) and others
5. Step by step description of procedure:
i see that ifoedit is saving the frame# of each chapter. but sometimes, the "V/C Id" (vob cell id?) is changing although that's not a new chapter:
original:
[Ch 01][Pg 01][Cell 01][V/C Id: 1/1] : time: [...]
[Ch 02][Pg 02][Cell 02][V/C Id: 1/2] : time: [...]
______________[Cell 03][V/C Id: 2/1] : time: [...]
[Ch 03][Pg 03][Cell 04][V/C Id: 2/2] : time: [...]
[Ch 04][Pg 04][Cell 05][V/C Id: 2/3] : time: [...]
______________[Cell 06][V/C Id: 3/1] : time: [...]
(note: underscores "_" only present spaces since they are are not properly displayed otherwise)
=> these are just 4 chapters, but IfoEdit makes 6 out of them (b/c of changing cell ids?) -> i already edited "celltimes.txt" and deleted the extra entries; let's see if that works.

[b]1. IfoEdit beta version:
pre 3.1
2. Subject/topic:
chapter numbering with "Save Celltimes to file"
3. Short description/report of problem or success:
not all chapter get integrated after removing excessive chapters (see 2 posts ago)
4. Name of dvd (incl. region code):
Die Hard With A Vengeance (R1)
5. Step by step description of procedure:
1. this time, i manually reduced the extra entries from 34 to 27 chapters by deleting the appropriate lines in "celltimes.txt" -> used notepad to edit.
2. did muxing with all 3 audio streams (see 2 posts ago) with no subs.
3. imported "celltimes.txt" for chapters.
=> IfoEdit created only 20 chapters in VTS_01_0.IFO
=> all audio-streams are accessible/switchable; there appears to be no freezing (but i only scanned through the movie)
=> my dvd-player displays erratic times (next report -> sorry, i accidentally deleted that report that was already posted :scared: )

I've been doing a lot of testing last week-end and I think I traced the "IfoEdit disappearing/crashing after a bit" back to the audio department. Whenever it does crash, try to cut down on the features, first of all remove subs and chapters and try again and most likely that won't help either so try to remove an audio channel. So far I have two titles where I'm certain that the audio is the problem and a blind guess would be that it's because the total bitrate gets too high (one time I have 5x448kbit/s audio and 1x384kbit/s audio, another time I have 1x448, 2x192 and 1x786 DTS). I know it's very time consuming but if anybody could confirm that it might be helpful for Derrow.

i extracted ac3-files on my HDD. how do i quickly check for their bitrates?

you can use headac3 but only for ac3 not for dts.
I don't know which tool can show dts bitrates.
dts uses typically 768 or 1536 kbps.

You can check it using VobEdit, prior extracting the streams.

[b]1. IfoEdit beta version:
pre 3.1
2. Subject/topic:
authoring dvd
3. Short description/report of problem or success:
erratic time display on my stand-alone dvd-player
4. Name of dvd (incl. region code):
Die Hard With A Vengeance (R1) (and also Rambo II R1)
5. Step by step description of procedure:
1. ripped using dvd-decrypter
2. reempeg'ed and got "die3.m2v" file (~ 3.02 gb)
3. extracted 3 audio streams, 3 subtitle streams, and chapters (together ~ 770 mb), but ONLY muxed the following:
- 0x80 2ch-ac3 (english)
- cell time import for chapters
=> movie seems to run fine (no freezing, although i only did a scan through the movie).
=> time display on my stand-alone dvd-player jumps between elapsed time and time of the next chapter (in roughly 1/4 second rhythm):
0:07:18 (time of next chapter)
0:07:11 (elapsed time)
0:07:18
0:07:11
0:07:18
0:07:12
0:07:18
0:07:12
0:07:18
0:07:13 etc.
BUT there is also a different display that has no pattern like (when jumping through chapters):
0:17:37
0:14:38
0:17:37
0:14:39
0:17:38
0:14:39
0:17:38
0:14:40
0:17:39
0:14:40 etc.

thanks derrow, i think i found it -- it says
"Sample rate + frame size code" and then
"nominal bitrate: 448 kbps" (or another value)
correct?

i'll check your theory, but i need to go to bed now  . bonne nuit!
