At last I didn't understand that the capacity of DVD-R is 4.3GB or 4.7GB ?
Please tell me which one is correct.

What is the capacity of a DVD disc?
It is 4,700,000,000 Bytes, i.e. 4,489 MB or 4,38 GB.

yeah but I am confiused because everywhere write 4.7GB not 4,700,000bytes.

for salespeople 1GB = 1 million bytes, as it makes your product look bigger. For computer user 1 GB = 1024x1024x1024 bytes... So.. both numbers are correct.. it's just a matter of your math.

But you know something, last week I went to a shop to buying a DVD-R disk. It was LG. You know what I saw? on the cover of the disk was wrote : "4.7GB capacity" And I was interested in it.
You know there is a lot of different between 4.3GB and 4.7GB
So I need to know was that disk 4.3GB also ?

The people calculate (and think!) in decimal system 10 digits (0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9)
KILO=1000 units
MEGA=1000kilo=1 milion units (1000 X 1000)
GIGA=1000Mega=1 milion kilo = 1 bilion units (1000 X 1000 X 1000)
The computers calculate memory (and think;) ) in hex(heximal??) system with 16 digits (0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,A;B;C;D;E;F)
KILO=1024units
MEGA=1024kilo=1,048,576units (1024 X 1024)
GIGA=1024mega=1,048,576kilo = 1,073,741,824units
For DVDrs and hard discs the people say 4.7GB but it is in decimal system. and they not lie to you. Therefore 4.7GB = 4,700,000,000bytes.
For the computer this is also 4,700,000,000bytes, but 4589843,75KB (4,700,000,000/1024), 4482,27MB ((4,700,000,000/1024)/1024) and 4,38 GB (once more divided by 1024). For example you know the specs for your HD, look in the information from Windows Explorer - it looks less GB. The same if you load a DVDr in DVD drive and request media info you will see 4.38GB. Then if your file is 4.38 GB (of course you have this information from the computer) it is 4,700,000,000 bytes and will fit on the disc. If it is more than 4.38GB - it will not fit.
Interestingly for CD-R the capacity is shown like calculated by computer - 800 MB = 819200KB = 838860800bytes.
So what you think now is it 4.7GB or 4.38 GB:p ?

actually, if we go into detail, we, "computer folks" are still doing it wrong. since 1999, 1024 bytes is 1 KiBi byte or 1KiB not 1 KB = 1000 bytes, it goes on :D kibi, mebi, gibi, tebi, pebi, exbi, extremly amusing.
