View Full Version : Upgrading to directx8 with capture ... how hard really?

I use directx7 in win98 still like a lot of people because I have a capture process which works. I use avi_io for multi-disk, multi-segment, multi-buffer capture and I like it.

What really is the impact of directx8 as of now? I know there is a wrapper but it seems to not always work well, and I'm guessing it would kill my ability to capture in avi_io.

Are there other results in other programs, like encoding, dvd playback, etc which are negative? I guess I will have to install a partition and check it out there, but that's a huge process of resizing drives on the fly and such. I would love to see a thread where people just specifically discuss all the various aspects of upgrading to directx8 and what they experienced.

i've upgraded (dx8 promised better capture performance,bla
bla,bla...)
and didn't saw any change.......
if you're satisfied with dx7 why bother?
i thought that dx8 will solve dropping frames problems on
some hardware,but it didn't.....
also i didn't see changes in image quality
[all this applies to capturing(to mjpeg or huff.avi) and watching mainly divx, don't know
if it helps mpeg2 playback etc.]
