Widescreen problems

Hey, im new to this stuff. Ive got a few Sopranos DVDS and would like to rip them. Ive managed to rip them using DVD Decrypter, but i cannot figure out how to encode them still in widescreen mode. It squishes the picture to makeit come out as the regular tv shape.
Any help would be appreciated

sorry mate.
well im pretty new to this, what i want in total newbie terms, is to stick in the dvd, and then copy it to my harddrive in the correct proportions.

Well I will reply here even if it isn't in the right forum. The video on the DVD is just copied directly when ripped with smartripper. The video on the DVD has flags (or something - I am not a programmer) that tell the player (software or hardware) what aspect ratio to make it so you don't have to do anything when ripping to deal with the aspect ratio (and afaik you can't influence the aspect ratio when ripping). What are you trying to encode it with? use aspect ratio 16x9 for wide screen, and 4x3 for full screen (but black bars can make a 4x3 aspect ratio video a wide screen movie, or even a 16x9 video a super wide screen movie). Try opening the vob (or m2v) with DVD2AVI to see what aspect ratio to use. DVD2AVI doesn't apply it’s detected aspect ratio when displaying the video so do not expect what it displays to look right. I imagine the guides here at doom9 explain about aspect ratios and most everything else you would need to know for simple DVD ripping.
