Problem with VirtualDub (OGM support) and subtitles (SubtiDS)

after a user pointed me out the problem I made some tests and get results I cannot understand.

To make those tests I took an uncompressed AVI (without audio), and a (valid) SRT file.

In VirtualDub I choosed Fast Recompress.

Using XviD (Koepi's build, 04-10-2002), or MsMpeg4v3 (and for the user that found the bug, DivX 3), I cannot play the resulting OGM file.
In graphedit the error is : "The graph could not change state. return code : 0x80070057"

In the decoder properties I have :
Input : XVID (for XviD case), 24 bits
Output : YUY2, 16 bits

If I do not include the subtitles, no problem on playback.

So I first thought it was a problem with the subtitle stream. But I made a test using DivX 5.
The decoder properties (in GraphEdit) give me same information :
Input : DX50, 24 bits
Output : YUY2, 16 bits

But here the OGM file works without problem :confused:

So what could that mean? Is this a problem with my mods in VirtualDub, with codecs except DivX 5, or with SubtiDS ?
And if it is a problem with my mods, can someone give me some hints on how to solve this?

I have a similar problem also.

I converted ac3 to ogg with Oggmachine and it plays well.

I used koepi's latest development xvid build (so this could be a problem) and it also plays nicely.

I used subrip to get an .srt file with only the italics tag.

If I use either OggMux or OGMuxer to combine the 3 files then I get about 3 seconds of sound and no video and then it stalls. If I fast forward then I get 3 more seconds of sound, at the proper location and then it stalls. In Media Player I get the message 'the parameter is incorrect'.

If I mux just the video and audio portion it plays fine in all players.

I am using Tobias' latest directshow filters for subs and ogg and nic's latest directshow filter for xvid.

Attached is the output from ogminfo. (when it gets approved)

I made some other tests, and even if I cannot tell what is the problem , it seems at least related (in part) to SubtiDS.
Indeed enabling DirectVobSub for embedded subtitles make it being used instead of SubtiDS. And in this case the subtitles work fine.

Now the question is : why DivX 5 (and it seems DivX 4 too) + subtitles rendered by SubtiDS works while XviD (or MsMpg4v3, or DivX 3) + same subtitles rendered by SubtiDS won't work ?

I changed some things on my configuration and I think I may have found an incompatibility.

It seems that Nic's Directshow xvid filter and Tobias' Directshow subtitle filter don't work nicely together. When I uninstalled the subtitle filter, play back was fine with no subs. When I uninstalled the xvid filter then subtitles worked. When I uninstalled Nic's latest xvid binaries it stopped working again. Then I uninstalled those and installed Koepi's latest development xvid binaries (the halloween one) and I get subtitles and video playback fine.

So, it seems that Tobias' subtitles and Nic's Xvid filters don't work together with ogm containers.

I have installed ffdshow also and seem to have the same problem as when I use Nic's Xvid filter. I get 3 seconds of audio, no video and then the player stalls.

Am I doing something wrong? I am using the newest OggDS and Subtitle filter from Tobias.

I thought maybe there was some conflict between Nic's filter and Tobias' filter but I figure someone would have posted something about that and what I'm experiencing is user error.

Can someone please help me if I'm doing something wrong here.

Xvid video with Ogg audio, subs:
In WiMP 6.4 -" An error occured when playing the file."
In WiMP 8 - "the parameter is incorrect."

Without subs, the file plays correctly. I don't appear to be using Nic's directshow filter, but I can't be sure, as there is no "About" in the properties screen in WiMP.

Hope this gets fixed.

Hi, had the same problem. Please try to install vobsub and enable automatic loading of dvobsub-filter. it worked for me, when vobsub loads the parameter isssue goes away. If somebody can confirm this behaviour it might help to solve the issue....
BTW settings in vobsub applied to the sub displayed by the filter from Tobias (i.e. shadow, outline)

I didn't say it before but this problem is not related to VirtualDub with OGM support (as described in the initial title of this thread) because the same happens with OggMux.

i am using OggMux to combine ogg audio, srt subtitles and xvid video.
whe i change from (no subtitle) to (subtitle) it does not work untel i seek the video and then it works.
also i did some ogg video that have freezing fram in the bigening but the orignal xvid one does not have this frezzing frame.

any body faced this problems or have any solution for them.

i'm having a problem getting oggmux to mux .srt subs in the first place... i just recently reinstalled all my ripping software and my os (XP pro) everything works great until i go to mux the subs and audio into the .ogm container...

I get a "failed to render input" or some error of that sort when attempting to mux...

I'm using ffdshow as my decoder

The xvid i'm using is koepis latest dev build

When i boot up my oldinstall i can mux the subtitles just fine... that install of XP does NOT have koepi's latest build of xvid on it... thats about the only software difference i can think of... also the newest install has what i assume to be the latest ogg ds filters off of tobias's website...

Are you sure you reinstalled SubtiDS ?

I have not figured out an easy way to do this on the FFDSHOW alpha. But on the older version there was a box to tell ffdshow to handle Xvid and to decode by itself or to use the actual xvid decoder and then process the video. If ffdshow is using the Xvid decoder to decode then that might explain the problem with ffdshow. It does use some of the source from Nic's Xvid decoder. Mostly the VFW interface IIRC. try to have ffdshow decode the video itself and see if it still flubs up.

@angelyote : sorry, I know it's a very old thread, but I need some info on the resolution you were using when the problem occured, if you still have it in mind.

Looking back I think some of them were 416x304, 480x352 was another. I don't really know all the resolutions anymore. I switched all the ogm files back to avi files. I saw some feedback that suggested there might or might not be a new release to fix this so I wasn't very inspired to keep working with it. It all seemed very non-committal.

I recall the solution to the problem being to install vobsub and set it to always load.

It's also easier to have 1 subtitle filter (vobsub) for me than needing 2 (ogm subtitle filter and vobsub).

Maybe I'll try it again when some new releases start rolling out but right now avis with a subtitles folder work reliably.

Thanks for the answer. I already came across the problem, when I used a resolution of 544*400 ( or 544*416, I don't remember well ). It seems that the horizontal resolution needs to be mod 64 to work flawlessly with Tobias' filter ( normally, I always use 640*YYY, 576*YYY, 512*YYY, and even sometimes 704*YYY, it was the only time I used another one ) Your resolutions also aren't mod 64. I don't have time right now to make a test, I will be able to do it in two days.

But until Tobias' goes on with the development of his filter, we have to use vobsub instead.

Hi guys,having almost the same problem. I mux 5 stream in ogm: 1 vide, 2 audio streams on diff. languages (cbr mp3) and 2 subs(srt) I have VobSub ds flter, OggDs filter and Ffdshow. When i try to play it on bsplayer, it crashes(but continues to play untill i close crush window). When i try to make the same ogm without subs, everythink is OK. Does anyone have an idea how to make it work?

Which version of BSPlayer did you use ? The 0.86.493 is buggy with subs in ogm, and won't work. In fact, BSlayer never worked well with ogm ( doesn't understand html tags ). Does your file work with WMP or Zoom Player ? If yes, it was entirely the fault of BSplayer. If not, what is the resolution you used ?

I tried to play the same file with wmp6.4 and zoomplayer, and it works (i can change all streams as well). So it seems that you are right, it is Bsplay problem. But it is not so easy for me to go to another player, cos i have P-II(celeron) 266mhz cpu, and only Bsplayer with ffdshow seems to be able to play divx(xvid) (sometimes even with some post-processing :) (if anyone knows some player that uses low cpu usage, can you name please one?)

I don't fully agree with you.
As for bsplayer, it's the only one for me to play ogm with correct aspect ratio while others (i.e. Zoomplayer, mplayer2) show some sort of vertically compressed picture and no way to fix this!!
Ironically, the last release of bsplayer should've incorporated tag support for internal srt -external worked before- and maybe it really does but something's messed up now. BST promised to look at it soon and if that's finished then the only difference between Zoomplayer and bsplayer in terms of ogm support will be that only bsplayer shows the "right picture"!

If the image is somehow compressed vertically, it must be a subtitle filter which modify the AR of the movie ( with adding black borders ).

Moreover, for me, BSPlayer was the only one to show the movie with a wrong AR ( I think he was getting resolution's information from the source, and was resizing the output of Tobias' subtitle filter, which is set to 4:3, to this former resolution )

It could be interesting to find out what the differences between your system and mine, beacuse the results are quite the opposite. I'm using OggSubtitleDSF, perhaps you use Vobsub ?

I tried a lot of settings, the only way to reproduce the wrong AR with ZP 2.9 was to set AR to 16/9 with ZP. I don't think it's your setting, so I'm as lost as you. Do you still get the same behaviour with MPC, WMP and other players ? What is the AR in the settings of ogg_subtitdis ? 4:3 ?

OK. Changing AR in SubTitDis from 4:3 to 16:9 got me rid of the vertical compression, but now the subtitles do not show up.
Unfortunately, video overlay couldn't be created.
Have to restart machine, at least that's what I always do when overlay cannot be initialized sometimes.
Don't know why...

the errors wen open in wmp are solved if overlay extended mode are selected in divx config... if using xvid, just map the fourcc in ogg properties..
