I have some movies emcoded with Xvid such as Insomnia, Clockstoppers, Enough...etc. They look all noisy and blocky. I can't get rid of this problem. I installed Xvid codec to the PC that use in my office for test and these movies look great there.
Why can't I have a decent Xvid picture with my PC at home? I have Divx3 and Divx5 installed in my PC, I uninstalled them and that didn't make any difference. Do I have to do something extra for watching XviD movies?

I gather from your post that you are trying to use the XviD playback filter.
If you run media player 6.4 (start --> run --> mplayer2) and look at the properties of your video when you load it, it should give you a list of filters that are being used to playback your video. Check that the XviD filter is one of them, and your pc isn't using something else.

I've also encountered XviD clips that look crap on one computer and perfect on a another. I've checked that the right filters are installed(on both computers)and still they look crap. They only look crap when watching then thru a media player like Zooomplayer or mplayer2. When loading them in VirtualDub they look just fine.

Unsure if this will help however:
Option 1:
Make sure you have the latest build of xvid
Option 2:
Use a different filter such as FFDSHOW. Or use AVI4CC changer to change the playback filter to divx 5.

Also remember, vdub uses xvid.dll to decode the video and has nothing to do with any directshow filters...(unless you force it in avisynth).

It might not be enough to have the filters installed - you need to make sure that the filters are also running when you play the movie in mplayer2.

eLNico:
Try setting your desktop color depth to 32 bit. That should help.

Measures I've taken:
I have tried Nic's latest DShow filter and also FFDshow.
I've changed the fourCC to divx5.
I've removed every component from my system and made fresh installs of the latest DShow filters(Nic's and FFDshow).
I've also set the colour depth to 32 bit and the movie still look ugly.
The movie looks fine on a older computer that I have connected to my TV. It has an old XviD DShow installed Koepi build from several months ago.
I have this problem with several XviD movies that I've seen the last couple of weeks. All encodes that I've created (always with Koepi's latest builds) look fine.
Would anyone find this acceptable ?

It's something to do with the xvid playback filter.. I think it was either compiled wrong or something... but I'm having the exact same issue. So use FFDSHOW or change the fourcc to use the divx playback filter. I'm using K's xvid builds, no sure if the playback filter with his latest builds are messed or something...

I switched Xvid to Divx from the FourCC and the problem is solved. Thank you very much to you all for your attention.

I installed an old ffdshow and now the movie looks fine. Maybe there is some kind of backward compability problem?

@eLNico
Which build is it that's working for you now?

I also have problems playing back XviD. There is no difference between ffdshow or Koepis, Nics or uManiacs Decoder so I guess that the failure is caused by the players:
The problem occures in WMP 6.4, WMP 9 and Zoomplayer but there is no problem in VirtualDub and BSPlayer! (Until now I havent tested any other players)
I noticed that in contrast to BSPlayer there is a Video Renderer Item shown up in the filter properties in WMP 6.4/9 and Zoomplayer, perhaps this is causing the playback differences between the Players?

@bond@doom9
VirtualDub and BSPlayer don't use direct show (VirtualDub, at least, uses xvid.dll to decode the video), the other players you mentioned do (therefore use xvid.ax or ffdshow.ax to decode the video). There are many differences between the different versions of ffdshow, and the various xvid builds - please specify which builds (date) of these you used. I suggest using the 10/14/2002 version of ffdshow, I have not had any problems playing back xvid (or div3) encoded video using that build of ffdshow (but I had problems using newer ffdshow builds).

@asmodian
If WMP and Zoomplayer use directshow why should i use xvid.ax or ffdshow.ax (which are directshow, arent they?)?
I read somewhere that WMP 9 uses DMO Decoders (not directshow)
I used the latest stable builds from Koepi (0410) and uManiac (2410) (and also Nics standalone decoder). The same problem occured also with ffdshow 2709 and 1410.
real strange situation...
PS Yes I was bond@doom9, just a small nick exchange :)

I just meant that WMP and Zoomplayer use xvid.ax or ffdshow.ax (as directshow filters) to play back xvid.
have you tried the newest version of ffdshow (2002-11-13)?
