I did some searching about the forums and so far an all-inclusive "these are generally recommended settings" post hasn't caught my attention. Could we start one now? :D

Here we go:

IDCT: XVID
NOISE: mplayer noise: Strength=15; Chroma Strength=4 (looks OK for me)
POSTPROCESSING: 100-200% (I'm using 200%)
SHARPEN: Strength: 10-20; Treshold: ~50 (I'm using it for res. like 512x? or 544x?)
Everything else = unchecked

NOTE: That's my settings and I don't know if you will like them - depends on your taste

Would you say these are good, middle-ground settings for movies, anime, etc.?

NOISE: New noise algo(avih): Strength=8
RESIZE: Always/Lanczos (640x480)
Postprocessing: Never used it
Everything else = unchecked

I view all my encodes(XviD) on a Toshiba 36" analog TV using TVout and a Geforce2 MX S-Video connection. I don't use the XviD IDCT due to horizontal line artifacts showing up in mid and shadow tones, noticed it on Nic's DSF as well. It could be caused by my TV setup but I doubt it. The settings above are obviously for clean rips so I don't have to use PP to cover artifacts:)

Edit- XviD is already very sharp if encoded properly, no need for me to use sharpening in playback.

I watch a ton of anime, and these seem to be "THE BEST" settings, according to me and to several other videophiles.
Under postprocessing, put the "Presets" slider to max (all the postprocessing features enabled), and I keep postprocessing quality at 100%. One time setting it to 200% made me think small artifacts were being introduced, so I just leave it at 100% to be safe.
Also, I've heard that you should always select "old libavcodec and opendix files" under Miscellaneous->Workaround encoder bugs.

Using any other settings gives worse quality when watching any anime I've found.

Postprocessing: Disabled (always)
Everything else: Unnessecary

My rips are encoded at full DVD resolution. Picture is very sharp and impressive so I don't need to apply any sharpen filters.
