Hi everybody,

Well, upon general and persistent request ;) especially from new XviD users, I hastily prepared a simple and not much detailed document trying to explain as clearly as possible how to encode with XviD using two pass and internal linear scaling. I hope at least some new users find it useful! It is attached to this post.

and I don't have Word. I tried to convert it by myself,

but I could only extract the text, but no images.

Yeah, I was wondering too. :D

I usually just use the default values with Motion Search Precision 6, but this guide uses different values. I haven't tested it out yet though.

it's a great tool for improving some characteristic parts of your movie. afar, the def settings in koepi's 041002dev is for improving the low bitrate scenes (being presumably the low-motion ones:-) i bet, it's fitted for 'the matrix' :-)
there are threads sentenced to linear & non-linear (re)scaling. worth to read. if u don't use this, u miss something vital.

Hello everybody,

I'm really glad to have received such positive replies :). As I mentioned before, this document is especially designed as a step-by-step "how-to-do" guide rather than a "why-to-do" one, as yaz has pointed out; therefore only the most generally-agreed-upon settings are employed in the document in accordance with the current status of XviD, rather than elaborating on the "reasons why", which is already done in detail in many threads in the XviD forum. It may be considered as a starting point for a more detailed future guide and is always open to discussion, improvement and updates as long as XviD development continues.

edit: Nic (and everyone): please feel free to host the document (the new updated version would be better I guess) on your site(s).

edit2: In addition to everything mentioned in the document, I strongly recommend using Marc's MPEG2Dec3.dll with lumoff=-2 parameter in your avs scripts to get rid of black-blocking issue as well.

edit3: @Emp3r0r: The issue you mentioned in your post (QPel activated with "6-Ultra High" in dev. builds if you don't use B-frames) is taken care of in the new updated version of the document attached to this post.

I think nesskiel wrote that he just changed the layout as the pages weren't "fitting" correctly, and just some words, specially repeatitions which aren't necessary in french. (Just a guess, my french is somewhat rotten.)

I found one possible error, though: In your doc it sais
If you choose “New Modulated HQ” now for second pass, H.263 quantization type will be used for quantizers </= 3, and MPEG quantization type will be used for quantizers >/= 4.

but isn't it the other way 'round?

PS: Is there a general consens (sp?) now that linear scaling is better than the alternative curve compression? I'm still using latter one for my rips.

old modulated mode: mpeg matrix for low quants
h263 matrix for high quants

First, thanks for the effort you put to translate the document to French! Having worked as a freelance translator for a long while in real life ;), I very well know what kinda troublesome business it is!

Well, as for the "update1", the important point is -> Page 1, the paragraph before the last one, last line -> (In ‘dev. builds’, “Motion search precision” of “6 – Ultra High” enables the use of Qpel if you’re not using B-frames)

Others are some very minor punctuation corrections and the deletion of the repetition in Page 4 regarding the "Two Pass" tab.

No man, it's not an error, that's how the "New Modulated HQ" quantization type (which is currently implemented only in Koepi's builds) works in the second pass. But you are right: "New Modulated HQ" works just the opposite of the old "Modulated" quantization type ;).

As for the linear curve scaling, many people have been reporting to get very good results with it (including me ;)).

Sorry "dostum" ;); in order to present and explain things as simple as possible, I didn't make any reference to your great "StatsReader", but people who are interested in using it (which also linear-scales the curve for the second pass) can find detailed information in the related threads imho.

Thanks for clarifying this - but somehow it seems strange to me that the "sharper" (MPEG) picture is used for higher compression (quant) and the somewhat blurred (H263) one for low quants.
But after all I'm not a video-codec coder, just a physicist :)

i got a question. in the document it says NOT to touch any of the settings other than the ones mentioned. but my default settings (of a fresh xvid install) are sometimes quite different to the default ones in your screenshots.

so should i modify them to match your settings or not touch them at all like you said?

The screenshots provided in the document does NOT reflect the default settings; they are the suggested, most optimal settings to get a decent encode. Therefore modify the default XviD settings as to match the settings provided in the screenshots and in the explanations.

Very nice and straight forward guide from Iago.
I propose that you consider archiving guides in
*.MHT format (Internet Explorer archive format (File-->Save As...)).
You just need to have Windows installed to read it.

This document really helped my xvid encodes a great deal.

In the newest dev build there are some new features like B-frame Quantizer offset, GMC checkbox and Chroma checkbox. Would it be possible to update this doc with suggested settings for these?

I know the gmc and chroma are sort of 'encoders preference' but it looks like Quantizer offset may have some optimal range that I don't know how to calculate....and it scares me :)
