I am trying to create a CDR99 (Intenso), using a Liteon 401248, which should be able to do it. I selected 999 as CD size. Is this the correct value?

The Nero gave an error at 99% of the burn, but almost 3 from 70 mins are missing from the movie, which is more than 2%. I was burning at 24, which may have been too fast.

Can anyone confirm the 999 MB setting? Then I would try slower. If that is too big, I would just reencode. What value should I choose?

Tsting with these is kinda expensive, and no CDRW ist there for playing arround with...

Thanks for the link but I found that article before. A search for cdr99 gives only 3 answers, one for overburn gives too many.

I need to find out, if 999 can be burned with the nero/liteon combo. If it can, I will have to find out, why my burn failed.

The linked post concern themselves maily with cdr90, why I taxed to the last MB I can wring out of them.

But here I would like to know if 999 is possible. Else I would have to reencode to 990, which would be a waste of time, if 999 should go. Then I only need to reduce speed and try again. Perhaps even Nero is not able to do 999 but vcdeasy is?

Thats why I ask. I don't want to pay to find out...

Not completely true. Many posts about 99 minute in that link.

As we found out every combination is different.

I could not get anything over 1gb to burn and if you set the bitrate tab to 999 remember the actual size is about 6mb's larger.
So your setting of 999 ends up with a final image of 1005-1006mb's.

I really think your DVD player will be the weakest link as was stated in that thread. You maybe able to burn a file that large, but playing it is another story.

My suggestion is that you drop the size to no larger then 990-993 in the bitrate tab. This will keep the image under 1gb. I do not remember anyone able to burn any larger.

Nero is not the best choice to burn these images. Try VCDEasy or CDRWIN. Once you find the max that will play in your DVD player I would drop the bitrate tab size by 1 or 2mb's to insure it works all the time.

In the end we can only offer suggestions to know for sure you are going to have to experiment.

Ok, so here is the after action report:
The setting of 999 is in fact ok!
After reading page 2 and 3 of the thread, I decided that it is most likely that the burn was too fast. So I used vcdeasy at 8x in my second attempt. The result was interesting. The CD burned all the way to the 1005 MB, and then counted another 15 or so MB leadout. I kept an eye on the LED of the Liteon. It did not flicker nor was there any report of an error. The CD Plays nicely. Usually, when I strech a CDR80 or CDR90, I get a burn error at about 2min overburn, which is during leadout.

This leasd me to assume that there is still more room (15+ MB) on the disc, and that I should see if I can wring even more out of it...

If you plan to play these discs in a stand alone player make sure to test them to the end. It was found that each players capicity to play these discs was different. In my case the Apex was by far the best. It allowed at least 20 or 30mb's more then the Pioneer did.

If your player doesn't work it will go into a continous loop at the end and not play the last few mb's. Don't try and use chapter search to see if it will read the change disc logo as this always worked for me. You need to go to the next to last or earlier chapter and play it through.

I have a LiteOn 32x10x40, and LiteOn unit does burn up to 99:59. When using VCDEasy, VCDEasy will complaint if the image is more than 99:59, and so for the stretch test I manage to put a combination of MPEG-1 files to get up to 99:57, and VCDEasy create an image of about 1015MB. I successfully burn this image on 99min CD, with a 8X speed, and SAMPO standalone play thru it. Except, for the time display of the SAMPO stop at 99:00, but it continue to play thru and finish it.

I think OVERBURN a 90-min or 99-min CDR, you have to burn it slow to ensure a good burn. For me, I don't do more than 8X. I only do the high speed (i.e. 24X and above) for the 80-min or 74-min.

While we're on the topic of CD burners, I'll veer a little bit offtrack, but I'm really curious about this. Anyway, a friend of mine brought over a bunch of 16x Memorex blank CD-Rs the other day. Without thinking, I went ahead and started burning on them at my normal speed of 32x (on my Lite-on). At the end of the disc, during the "lead out" stage, there was an error, and the red, writing light stayed on the burner and wouldn't turn off no matter what I tried. Finally, I had to restart to get the thing to stop whatever it thought it was doing. I thought for sure the disc wouldn't work, and I blamed it on my burning at 32x, instead of the stated 16x disc support.

However, when I opened the CD in Windows, it read perfectly fine, and the software I had burned even installed and worked flawlessly. How is this possible, I wonder?

Since then, I did some more testing, and when I do not finalize the CDs, and therefore do not do the lead out stage, I do not get any errors whatsoever, and the discs burn and work perfectly everytime.

Does anybody have any idea how that is possible?

Because I know for a fact that if I can burn at 32x on 16x CDs, I'm going to save a good deal of money on my next 100 spindle ;) I'm just gonna buy 16x then :P

Yeah i've read some articles online about different makes of cdr's and some that are 16x were able to be burned up to 32x but some 24x's were not. Some 24x's were able to be burned up to 40x also. I think if my memory serves me that memorex was one of the good ones in the tests. And i think your point is a good one to bring up that not only is it hardware that sometimes can limit you but also the name brand of cdr's do differ in quality and sometimes it's not easy to figure out which is causing you problems. But in your case it was a good thing so it shows that different name brands have alot also to do with results.

UltimateDBZ I don't even think they make 16X CD-R discs anymore. I think you just got some old stock.

The last few free or close to free discs were TY's and they are about the best you can get. The name on the company label varies. I have some by TDK and others by Memorex, but they are all the same discs made by TY in Japan. High quality 16X will kill low low quality 32X everytime. Both in burning speed and longevity. Most times a speed rating was what was around at the time. I am pretty sure your 16X discs label was made when that was the fastest speed.

There is a thread in the general section on this.

I am pretty sure that you closed your session while not closing the disc. This will let you read it and then write more to it, but you may loose the old info if you don't do it right.

if so, I am not surprised. After all, the data location information is present, as well as the data. I think the leadout is mainly there for repositioning. That is, if it fails to find data at the outer rim, it will find itself in the leadout. That way it'll kow that it has to go back some microns. Your disk has a smaller leadout. This could lead to seek errors when looking for data at the rim. Perhaps todays drives are precise enough, so that it doesn't matter...

Most cheap labels (at least in Germany) don't specify there CDs for burning speed. I have checked several brands, and many have just an empty entry at the place where the allowed burning speed belongs to.
I check this with a small tool called 'CDR Media Code Identifier', this tools just reads the ATIP information, where burning speed, manufacturer etc is.
But if you buy some brand where the burning speed of 16x _is_ specified, you won't be able to burn at higher speed.
