ok, first of all system specs:

Athlon XP 2000+ at 1.57ghz
IBM Deskstar ata100 7200rpm 40gb drive
MSI Ultra2-r Mobo (KT333)
256mb PC2100 Cas2.5 DDR-Ram
forgot to say my os, its Win2k with SP3

now, when im transcoding dvds, i get like 0.600-700, unsure if this is right, im sure ive heared ppl getting a lot higher than this, same for VCDs at vcd res i get like 1.000, again ive heared of ppl getting much much higher, was wondering if you could help me out at all?

Well i have a 650mhz amd durron , 320 mb ram (dimms) 40gb 7200 seagate hdd , i just encoded from avi (21.46mins) to mpeg in cce 2.5 (4 pass VBR) got a peak of .913 and average = .8 dont know if this helps as my spec isnt great ;)

AVIsynth 2.06 with no filters/resizing at all
CCE 2.66.01 @ 3000-4000 VBR (for DVD-R)

Speed: 2.8x realtime

Specs:
Pentium 4 2.4Gb, overclocked to 2.61Ghz
512Mb PC1066 RAMBUS RAM (overclocked to PC1160)
Maxtor ATA133 7200rpm 40Gb x2 as RAID0 (onboard Promise)
Giga-Byte 8IHXP mobo, with F7 BIOS

ArcticFox: your speed seems kind of slow (my old Dual Athlon1600 used to do 1.8x with its DDR2100 RAM). You havent given many details of HOW you are encoding. This is key, as there are some very slow inefficient ways of doing this....

same procedure here

vobs/dvd2avi/avisynth 2.06/CCE

no filters/no resizing/
using just an 2 line script

full 720x576 PAL

CBR Q30-Q40 / VBR ~3000 0-9000

i come about 1.0 - 1.1 max

System

WIN XP PRO SP1

512 MB DDR 266 INFINEON CL2
2 x 80 GIGS IBM 7200 rpm

what i also dont know, how some come up to those speeds ;)

well, i encode while still other services running like norton AV,
zone alarm, IRC, raiden ftp, ...

i once tryed shutting some down to see if there are coming
any increases, didnt made any "real" changes,
so i stay with it :D

Yeah, I also dont shut down any background services.
I noticed a huge speed increase when I went from DDR to RAMBUS. Opening up bandwisdth seemed to do wonders. I had built a dual Athlon2000 which had been o/c to dual 2200 speed, but still had the same Crucial DDR2100 in it (and an AMD760 chipset). My encoding speed went from 1.85 to 2.1 (compared to the dual 1600). I think the 760 chipset with it's anemic memory bandwidth was strangling the encoding process.

I was getting up to 1.56 when doing CCE 2.5 ~3500 - 5500 don't remember the bitrate for my top speed but it never dropped below 1.4

now i upgraded my box to

athlon xp 2100+
512mb mushkin pc2100 (same ram, waiting on ddr433 crucial)
gigabyte ga-7va (kt400)
st373405lw hdd

and I'm using avisynth 2.06 with the simplest 3 line script (mpeg2dec, source, resample audio due to athlon)

and i'm getting between 1.3 to 1.44 on most encodes in CCE 2.5 with similar bitrates. when i have free time i'll test out vfapi again with this new box, but if anything I thought my scores would go up with avisynth. Is it a memory bandwidth issue? Don't know.

I wouldn't load up your machine on RAMBUS memory as the industry is going to DDR. Rambus will be extinct in a few years.

"a few years"?! This machine will be gone by next summer!
As it stands, Granite Bay with Dual DDR catches up to basic RAMBUS PC1066, and I am running faster than that right now.

Nothing is etched in stone in our hobby - we accept that, but right now and for the immediate future, RAMBUS IS the bandwidth king. By the time DDR catches up to SiSandra scores in EXCESS of 4000 for memory, then I will get one.

Like most things in life, it boils down to what makes you happy. I have a fast, fun machine which encodes at 2.8x realtime. I am quite quite satisfied with that.
