xvid produces small file size

When encoding with xvid produces a small file size. I used vdub,dvd2avi,flaskmpeg, and others but all of them produce a very small file size when encoding with xvid, looks like xvid has stopped working on my machine - win98, i tried all - uninstalling, starting, shutting , deleting keys from registry but nothing works. What internal settings should i change to make xvid work. Pl help

None of my programs work with XVID. enen though I have installed XVID. Is there any win 98 troubleshhoting with xvid, I use dvd2avi and vidomi to encode with XVID but produces either very small sizes or large sizes. How do i debug with xvid, install, reinstall,startup, shutdown, tried all , none works.help me

Define small. Just how small is the video file? Does the video file play? If yes, how is the quality? What settings did you use?

if its a working file then is the movie very dark? are you using B-frames etc???

"won't work" is meaningless and a bit offending for the generous people who spend a lot of their time to products they give to the community without asking anything in return. And by reading such a subject the newcomer gets the impression that XviD does not work at all and that if will probably not in the future. But it works!

I have used vidomi, flaskmpeg to process the vob file. I have a VOB of size 5 mb and after encoding with xvid I get a file size of 10kb.
I am using the default settings as given in xvid settings.As simple as that. I use zoom player to play the avi file and zp just hangs. Using xvid or divx encoders I should have redueced the size to 15% ..to 750 kb. It looks like the software is ignoring the encoder.
Please let me know on a OS basis as to what I should do. I tried all uninstalling, installing nic's latest xvid and others but doesn't help. None of the tools are giving a playable file.
Anything wrong I am doing on a very basic level.
I have used xvid before to encode and it has worked fine. Will installing divx 5.02 give problems. Mine is a Win 98 system.

ok 1st of all 5mb for a VOB is pretty bad!!! have you only ripped 1 vob? please explain your situation? a vob is normaly* .99mb i.e almost 1gb this could be why nothing is working . or maybe it was a typo and i am just ranting on for no reason well looks like i better stop ty.......................

I have used vob splitter to split/spit a very small filesize so that I cna work on it. I managed to do this using vobsplit. When i use dvd2avi to produce a avi file with the default configuration ( i am not even processing the audio) I get a 10kb filesize for the video ???

very strange , the first thing i would do would be to try and rip the whole dvd again using smart ripper or a program alike and see whatresults you get. maybe someone else has an idea?

If the vob is just 5 mb then it can't contain anything.

So stop blaming XviD for your ripping fault - when there IS nothing it can't encode anything. Try DivX and you'll see that it's not working either.
Read through doom9's ripping guides and come back then (rule no. 1: read the guides).

My advice: don't split VOB files, use what you obtains from the rip.

Rip the movie as a whole, of course, because VOB files are .. don't know how to say, because english is not my mother tongue.. I would say "chained". I mean, there are problem if you try to encode the movie and you don't have the first vob file of the movie.

Using GordianKnot, you can select which part of the movie you want to encode, later, if you don't want everything (want to get rid of credits?). Also, you can resize, apply filers.

Vidomi is nice, but does not give you as much control as GordianKnot does. One of the nicest feature that makes teh difference: teh simple compressibility test to predict how well the movie can be compressed using a codec. I've never tested GKnot using XviD yet, though. I've used Xvid With other tools.

Smartripper is usually intelligent enough to detect the main movie and rip it, without the bonuses and so on. I always used it until now.
