View Full Version : P4 better than Athlon? Fewer BIN files?

montgom
26th October 2002, 22:45
I have a small question.
I ripped Scrooged (Bill Murray), using two systems.
P4 2.4 with 512 DDR
Athlon 1900+ 512 DDR

The P4 created two final bin file.
The Athlon created 3 bin files! And the Athlon third bin file is 333 MB, not just a little bit bigger.

Both used DVD2SVCD with identical setups. Identical settings, identical applications (both used CCE 2.5)

So, why the difference in the final product? The Athlon 1900+ took 2 ½ blank CDR and the P4 took 2 blank CDR.

I will attach the dvd2svcd_log.txt from the Athlon and from the P4.
Bob

First, forum rule #9 says not to use ??? or !!! to attract attention to your post. Please change your title.

And second, the difference in sizes doesn't mean 1 processor is "better" than the other, although it is interesting.

It looks like the bitrate on the Atlon got locked to 2230. Take a look in the bitrate tab and see i min avg bitrate is checked and if so what it is locked. Basicly compare the two bitrate tabs (P4 vs. Athlon)

See:

Athlon:
Video Encoding Mode: Multipass VBR
Min. bitrate: 300
Max. bitrate: 2530
Avg. Bitrate: 2230
Aspect Ratio: 16:9 (borders added, encoded as 4:3)

Max. bitrate: 2530
Avg. Bitrate: 1794
Aspect Ratio: 16:9 (borders added, encoded as 4:3)

Thanks for your reply.
I did not notice the bitrate.
I did not "select" the bitrate.
Does DVD2SVCD "choose" the bitrate automatically?
Any explanation on why the bitrate was different?
I cannot "see" a difference between the two SVCDs when viewed on a Sampo DVD player. Should I ?

it all depends on what quality is acceptable to you...
dvd2svcd starts with it's default settings when you first install and the only way they will every change is if you change them, dvd2svcd will never do that.

I can assure you that except for audio, (deselect 48->44 and 192 kbps) I change nothing in DVD2SVCD from the defualt settings.

Why? I just don't know enough. And, the default settings just seem to work.
But I will reinstall and try it again. May take me a few days, but I will figure this out.

I checked the bitrate tabs on the two systems (P4 and Athlon) and the tabs are identical. Any other suggestions? Appreciate your input.

What is meant by "internal" routines?
I am not familiar with this.
I will be glad to do it!
How do I do it?

You should read the guides that are here plus the sticky's Q&A also here is a link you should read that will show you what and where the internal routines is located http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/dvd2svcd.htm

I have read all the Q&A and I use only the routines built into DV2SVCD and CCE 2.5, just as they come from the author. In otherwords, I use DVD2SVCD in "stock" form.

Did you rip the DVD with DVD2SVCD?

Did you copy the VOB files from one computer to the other or re-rip with DVD2SVCD?

I ripped with DVD2SVCD. I copied the ripped files from one computer to the other and then continued with DVD2SVCD for the rest of the process, (on both computers)

I know this is grasping at straws, but try ripping the DVD over again directly to the computer you copied to.

Something had to have happened to change the stream count.

I will do that. Sounds like good advice.

Then I wonder whether Pentium4 or Athlon XP work faster with DVD2SVCD?

I am sorry! Actually I am really a newbie to DVD2SVCD and this forum though I've tried exploring it.

I did exactly as you suggested and you were right!
I ripped the same DVD on each computer and then did the conversion. End result is same number of CDR used, unlike when I ripped the DVD on one machine a copies it over to another. Why this would make a difference is beyond my comprehension, but it appears to be the reason. So no difference between the Athlon vs the P4 when it comes to final number of CDRs used.

I am glad it worked.
Why this happened I cannot say.
