0. Ogg
1. Demux
2. DVD2AVI, because I'm used to it and it always worked for me ( I didn't know that besweet could add automatically the right delay when transcoding from the vob, perhaps I will give it a try )
3. Two-pass, I have time to spend
4. Don't know, always use OggMachine
5. OggMachine ( I'm lost when using BeSweet , to much options )

I switched from vbr-mp3 to ogg_vorbis and I'm glad to did it
1. are you transcoding directly from vob or first demuxing the ac3 ?
I know BeSweet supports direct vob transcoding but must admit that I first demux the ac3...
2. if you demux the ac3 first, which tool do you use, and why do you prefer demuxing it ?
as I said I demux to ac3 first but I don't use a special tool for it... just let DVD2AVI do its job, why?! - cause I'm lazy ;)... vob-input, ac3 and d2v output
3. are you using two-pass for normalization or using one-pass ?
and again... I'm a lazy boy - I just use your 'DSPguru_OGG@90kbps' profile :D
4. is your preferable commandline differs from BeSweetGUI's predifined profiles ? if yes - in what way ?
look @ 3rd question/ answer
5. which front-end you use for audio encoding ? (BeSweetGUI/BeSure/DVD2SVCD/GKnot/OggMachine/AC3Machine/AACMachine/etc'..)
I'm using BeSweetGUI from "day one" referring to my starting point in video/ audio transcoding

EDIT : few advanced questions.
6. if you encode to ogg vorbis. do you use the two-pass huffman coding calculation feature -ogg( -rehuff ) ?
7. do you use BeSweet's Super Equalizer feature ? if so, which frequency response (.eq file) do you usually use ?
advanced questions for advanced users... I don't think that I'm an advanced one ;)

I hope I could help you a little bit

cheers Sill

0. ac3 or mp3
1. demuxing first
2. smartripper 2.41. To load it to GKnot for video bitrate calculation and to HeadAC3he to encode it or AC3Machine to lower the bitrate.
3. two pass
4. have no clue. Probably not.
5. HeadAC3he for MP3 cause it can do Dolby Surround II and sometimes AC3Machine to lower the ac3 bitrate
6. I do not encode to vorbis yet
7. No

0. MP2
1. Demux
2. DVD Decrypter because I got the problem with encoding VOB containing both video & audio. I love to encode VOB directly into MP2 but I have to demux into separate VOB first, which contains only audio. So, what's the point to demux into VOB instead of AC3?
3. I don't use normalisation. However, I do use two-pass gain from oct.
4. Yes, if there's a bug inside BeSweetGUI generating command line, otherwise stick with GUI (faster).
5. BeSweetGUI

3. don't know exactly, what does gknot use?
4. i just use --r3mix, the rest is standard.
5. gordian knot.
6. i don't use ogg.

there's a new OggMachine & BeSweet on my beta page (http://dspguru.notrace.dk/beta.html).
i would suggest that those of you who haven't tried that before, try using all those features you're not familier with:
1. direct vob->ogg. (just select SmartRipper's .lst file as your 'input' file).
2. check the 'use two-pass huffman codebook calculation' and read the logfile at the end. you'll see you saved some extra filespace.
3. use 'HybridGain' instead of two-pass. (hybridgain for vobs isn't implemented yet, though. only ac3/etc'..).
4. create a .eq file in winamp & superequ with your fav. frequency response. then pick this .eq file inside OggMachine, encode, and see if you can hear imporvement in the result.

and thank you - for all poll's participants.
Dg.

Segher claims that by using rehuff our files won't be seekable any more. Is this correct? By the way, I don't think Segher thinks this feature is stable enough to be implemented currently. At least it's in the beta version of OggMachine, but still, a lot of people will be using it, unbeknownst to themselves they might be messing things up, long-term.

EDIT: Confirmed, at least when played in Winamp. The file is unseekable after the first seek.

EDIT: When inside the .ogm container, the rehuffed files work perfectly, no problems with seeking.

MP3
1. are you transcoding directly from vob or first demuxing the ac3 ?
Demux
2. if you demux the ac3 first, which tool do you use, and why do you prefer demuxing it ?
Just habit from the days when I used Azid then Lame manually. Makes me happy. :)
3. are you using two-pass for normalization or using one-pass ?
Two pass
4. is your preferable commandline differs from BeSweetGUI's predifined profiles ? if yes - in what way ?
Use --r3mix (yeah, yeah - --alt-preset standard is better... :p) for 2 CD rips and a lowish bitrate ABR for 1 CD.
5. which front-end you use for audio encoding ? (BeSweetGUI/BeSure/DVD2SVCD/GKnot/OggMachine/AC3Machine/AACMachine/etc'..)

0. mp2, 5.1 aiff

1. demux

2. DVD2AVI, because of .d2v project and visual cutting for SVCD

3. No normalization, because AC3 is well-documented to downmix without that.

4. 10 dB gain to compensate DPL2 downmix attenuation

0. mp2-MPEG 5.1
1. demuxing
2. DVD2AVI.

I am a Stargate, StarTrek fan. Almost all eps have been released in Europe on DVD already and the video has been transcoded to DIVX with AC3 intact. I use DVD2SVCD to create SVCDs, but with a twist. I slow the video to 23.976 FPS using Avisynth to get an NTSC Film stream. Then apply pulldown. Since all of these eps have not been pitch correctd for PAL, just sped up, I need to transcode audio to .wav then pitch shift it in SoundForge. I then encode to .mp2 using BeSweet (BeSweet GUI) Result is a perfectly synced SVCD that plays on my region 1 player.

3. Two Pass AZID for maximum gain. Stargate eps are very low on audio.
4. Yes. Always encode audio at 224kbs, psy model 2 when I can (Buggy)
5. BeSweet GUI (Excellent. Just wish there was an interface to multiplex 6 wavs to AIFF then to MPEG 5.1)

Just a side note to everyone creating SVCDs from AC3/Mulit-channel input. The output from an MPEG 5.1 stream into a receiver that can decode it is indistinguishable from the origional AC3 stream.

I took a test SVCD into American TV. The sales guy's jaw dropped when he heard the correctly decoded audio coming from a kenwood receiver. He couldn't believe the quailty from a home burned DVD riped disc.

We then tried the same disc on a few other other receivers and they did a simple prologic decode, but were unable to directly decode MPEG 5.1. You CAN tell the difference.

SO your DVD player does not need to support MPEG 5.1. It just needs to be able to feed RAW audio to your receiver. We used an Apex AD-1500 with a coax connector to a Kenwood receiver for the MPEG 5.1 test. We were both cracking up seeing a $59.00 DVD player feeding audio into a $1000 receiver. His $299 panasonic DVD player wouldn't even recognize the SVCD.

Which Kenwood receiver did you use? The expensive THX top model KRF-X7775D? AFAIK the lower models don't have a MPEG-2 decoder.

The kenwood receiver was the VR-5090. It is the cheapest (and only)MPEG 5.1 receiver I could find without going to a specialty shop. It was also on sale for $899.00. I really wish I had the cash for this receiver. Would make an EXCELLENT christmas present. Mayne I will drop the wife some hints.

0. what format do you usually encode to ? (ac3/mp3/mp2/wav/ogg)
Ogg Vorbis
1. are you transcoding directly from vob or first demuxing the ac3 ?
I demux AC3 at RIP time, it's a my habit for further flexibility
2. if you demux the ac3 first, which tool do you use, and why do you prefer demuxing it ?
I use DVD Decrypter 3.1.3.0 for all rip, demux AC3 at rip time doesn't cost me anything (time)
3. are you using two-pass for normalization or using one-pass ?
Two pass, haven't checked how works the other yet. (hybrid?)
4. is your preferable commandline differs from BeSweetGUI's predifined profiles ? if yes - in what way ?
5.1 to stereo (not surround) using vorbis 0.200 ~90kbit, dialog norm. on (general volume more constant and more ramp-able, less dynamics during film and less manual volume intervention during playback ;))
Dynamic comp.=light to obtain little volume gain but also preferring near to original *sound dynamics*. (normal seems too compressed)
5. which front-end you use for audio encoding ? (BeSweetGUI/BeSure/DVD2SVCD/GKnot/OggMachine/AC3Machine/AACMachine/etc'..)
BeSweetGUI -> copy & paste command-line -> custom cumulative batch file ;)
6. if you encode to ogg vorbis. do you use the two-pass huffman coding calculation feature -ogg( -rehuff ) ?
Yes
7. do you use BeSweet's Super Equalizer feature ? if so, which frequency response (.eq file) do you usually use
Hate equalization :)
(if yes, maybe only for playback)

I'm a bit surpised that are plenty of people that don't use vorbis yet (!).
And even if they re-encode audio anyway... to gather how much space?
In my opinion if I have to *touch* the AC3 track it's because I want shrink it, otherwise I leave it and mux as is.
My preferred audio choices are:
1) Ogg Vorbis -q2 (~90kbit) for average movie
2) Ogg Vorbis mixed quality parts (-q2 dialogs/background / -q6 soundtracks)
3) original AC3
...
...
99) MP3 :D (even PS2 can play Ogg Vorbis now... no no, I don't want it anymore, I don't have any quality/support motivation!)

P.S.: to all SmartRipper (2.41) users: anyone has experienced random bad messed up audio/video frames after rip??
It's not your DVD unit fault but the rip program! :D
So I have abandoned my good old fashioned SmartRipper :( to pass with DVD Decrypter and now the same "bad" DVDs get ripped 100% error free!!
Arrrgh!
