Help with *.avi Files

Hi, lads

While reading in this forum I understand there is a problem feeding DVD2SVCD with AVI Files > 2GB because CCE 2.50 does not allow it. I'm digitizing Video from a DV camera into the MS DV Codec (Firewire). These files can become a size of 10-20 GB. DVD2SVCD freezes every time while encoding. Is there a way of serving the data directly from Adobe Premiere either :

- directly in CCE 2.62 0r 2.64 via Avisynth. Does somebody have a template for CCE to make SVCD in that quality that DVD2SVCD reaches with DVD's ?

- directly into DVD2SVCD (but where to load the *.avs script and how would the settings be?)

In other words : How can a newbie make these wonderful SVCD's not from DVD's (that works perfect here) but from DV-material made with Premiere 6.0

hmmmm...ive never had a problem with files larger than 2 gigs...are you on winNT or XP? all my encodes go ok.

XP. As soon as Audio Encoding has finished, DVD2SVCD freezes and in the menubar stands "Keine Rückmeldung" which is the German equivalent of "No Reply". At a second try I switched the machine of after 26 hours. Status bar said 25 % done, the CPU Monitor said 100% action.

Usually I need about 12 hours for a complete DVD !!!

I routinly encode avi files that are anywhere between 5gb and 20gb in size with dvd2svcd with no problems. I believe the main thing you need to make sure of is that it is a type 2 file. There are converters that will help (the one that comes to mind is canopus). Are you using dv from a camera or are these captures via a capture card? What programs are you using to transfer/capture this video? I use either Pinnacle Studio or Video Vegas for both firewire dv transfer and for video capture. Both of these progs save the avi as type 2 and dvd2svcd (using cce) has no problems.

As I found out in the above thread, directly input CCE 2.5 does have a 2GB limit, but using DVD2SVCD we frameserve and this overcomes that limitation.

I would recomend you convert your drive to NTFS for these very large files, if you are using Fat32.

What about this DV Type 1 or 2 ??

I'm digitizing with a Pinnacle DV500plus. I have the coice to save my file in Pinnacle DV Codec or in MS DV Codec. Both seem to fail.

What is Type 2 anyway ? Should I convert to check ? How ?

Type 1 is usually what causes trouble, Type 2 is what you want.

Put it down to a brain fart. Single file in FAT32 yes 9GB is larger then it can handle.
I missed the part of your post that said 10-20Gb's and only saw greater then 2GB.

For some great tips on converting DV video search in the advanced forum for posts by DDogg. He used to do this all the time and came up with some nice theories. Some of these maybe outdated because of version revision, but you might catch some tips.

What program are you using Lance to output the avi for dvd2svcd? I transfer from the cam to hd using both Video Vegas and Pinnacle Studio.

I had a problem with Studio v7's dv codec and cce. My encodes would freeze right after the audio encode finished like yours. But I found that if you close dvd2svcd and restart it, then select recover from video encoding, it would proceed fine. For some reason it was hanging when it was writing the cce scripts.

Now I use Studio 8, and apparently Pinnacle changed their dv codec. I no longer have that problem.

Good Idea, I try that. Normally I am using my DV500 together with Premiere 6.0 to digitize. It would me most effective, if I could serve the stream directly into CCE via "avisynth" 0.3 from Ben Rudiak-Gould, but I am not able to develop the right matrix and settings.
So what I have to do is making an export from Timeline and usually I choose Microsoft DV Codec with the genuine settings (e.g. 720x568, 25 fr. and so on. I have the chance to save the stream as "Pinnacle DV Codec". To be honest I never tried, I thought this might be a little to special for DVD2SVCD, but who knows.

When i use the Canopus DVD decoder to decode my exported MS DVI avi file to another canopus avi file i get several separate 001 002 003 etc files. I can't be doing anything wrong but i don't know what's the cause of this problem.

I'm trying to convert a 13GB avi file.
